Zacchaeus - Jesus Seeks the Lost
Jesus calls a despised tax collector down from a tree and changes his life.
In the wealthy city of Jericho, there lived a man named Zacchaeus. Now, Zacchaeus had a very important job - he was the chief tax collector! That meant he was in charge of all the other tax collectors in the whole region. He was a very rich man.
The story
But there was a big problem with Zacchaeus's job. Tax collectors worked for the Roman government, which ruled over the Jewish people. The Jewish people didn't like paying taxes to Rome - these were their enemies who had conquered their land! And tax collectors often cheated people, charging them MORE than they really owed and keeping the extra money for themselves. So everyone HATED tax collectors! They thought tax collectors were traitors and thieves.
Zacchaeus was especially despised because he was the CHIEF tax collector - he had gotten very rich by cheating people for years! Nobody wanted to be his friend. When he walked down the street, people would cross to the other side to avoid him. Children were told to stay away from him. He had lots of money, but he was very lonely. Deep inside, Zacchaeus knew that something was missing in his life.
One day, exciting news spread through Jericho: "Jesus is coming! The famous teacher and healer is passing through our city!" Everyone was buzzing with excitement! They had heard amazing stories about Jesus - how He healed the sick, made blind people see, and taught wonderful things about God.
Zacchaeus heard the news too, and something stirred in his heart. He wanted to see Jesus! He had heard that Jesus was kind to everyone - even to people that others rejected. "Maybe," Zacchaeus thought, "maybe Jesus won't hate me like everyone else does."
So Zacchaeus rushed out to the main road where Jesus would pass by. But when he got there, his heart sank. Huge crowds had already gathered! People were packed along both sides of the road, everyone pushing and jostling to get a good view. And here was Zacchaeus's other problem - he was very short! He tried to push through the crowd, but taller people blocked his view. He tried standing on his tiptoes, but he still couldn't see over all the heads in front of him.
To make matters worse, when people recognized Zacchaeus, they deliberately blocked his way. "Out of the way, tax collector!" they said meanly. "You don't deserve to see Jesus!" Nobody would let him through. Zacchaeus felt so small and unwanted.
But Zacchaeus was determined! He looked around desperately - how could he see Jesus? Then he had an idea! He saw a big sycamore-fig tree a little further down the road, right where Jesus would pass. Without thinking about how silly he looked, this rich, important man hiked up his fancy robes and scrambled up into the tree! He climbed higher and higher until he found a good branch to sit on. From up there, he had a perfect view of the road!
Some people below saw him and laughed. "Look at that! The chief tax collector is sitting in a tree like a child!" they mocked. But Zacchaeus didn't care. He could see now, and that's all that mattered.
Zacchaeus waited in the tree, his heart beating fast. Soon, he could see Jesus coming down the road, surrounded by His disciples and the crowd. Jesus was talking to people, blessing children, and smiling. He looked so kind! Zacchaeus's heart filled with hope just watching Him.
As Jesus came closer and closer to the tree, Zacchaeus held his breath. Jesus was almost directly below him now! And then something amazing happened - something Zacchaeus never expected in a million years.
Jesus stopped right under the tree. He looked up. His eyes met Zacchaeus's eyes. And Jesus smiled! Then Jesus called out, "Zacchaeus!"
Zacchaeus nearly fell out of the tree in shock! Jesus knew his name! How did Jesus know his name?
Jesus continued, "Come down immediately! I must stay at your house today!"
Zacchaeus couldn't believe his ears! Jesus wanted to come to HIS house? Important rabbis and teachers never visited tax collectors - they thought tax collectors were too sinful! But Jesus was choosing to come to his home!
Zacchaeus scrambled down from the tree as fast as he could - so fast he almost tripped! When he reached the ground, he stood before Jesus with a huge smile on his face. "Yes, Lord! You are welcome in my home!" Zacchaeus said joyfully. His heart was bursting with happiness! Someone important actually wanted to spend time with him!
But the crowd was shocked and angry! "What?" they muttered. "Jesus is going to be the guest of a SINNER? How can He associate with such a terrible man?" They couldn't understand why Jesus would choose to visit the most hated man in town!
But Jesus didn't care what the crowd thought. He saw what others didn't see - He saw Zacchaeus's lonely heart. He saw that Zacchaeus was searching for something more than money. Jesus saw that Zacchaeus could change!
As Jesus went to Zacchaeus's house that day, something wonderful happened in Zacchaeus's heart. Jesus's love and acceptance changed him completely! All those years of cheating people, all that guilt he'd been carrying - it all came pouring out. Zacchaeus realized how wrong he had been. Jesus's kindness melted his hard heart!
Right there, in front of everyone, Zacchaeus stood up and made an announcement. "Look, Lord!" he declared. "Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor! And if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back FOUR TIMES the amount!"
Can you imagine? Zacchaeus was giving away HALF of everything he owned to help poor people! And for everyone he had cheated, he would pay them back four times as much! This was amazing! The greedy tax collector had become generous! The cheat had become honest! Meeting Jesus had changed everything!
Jesus smiled at Zacchaeus with such love and pride. Then Jesus said to everyone, "Today salvation has come to this house! This man, too, is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost."
Jesus was saying that Zacchaeus was part of God's family now! Yes, Zacchaeus had been lost in his sin and loneliness - but Jesus had found him and saved him! That's why Jesus came to earth - to find people like Zacchaeus who are lost and bring them back to God.
Remember this
“For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.”
What did we learn?
This beautiful story teaches us so many important things! First, it shows us that NOBODY is too bad for Jesus to love. Everyone thought Zacchaeus was terrible, but Jesus saw his potential and loved him anyway. No matter what you've done, Jesus loves you! Second, it teaches us that when we truly meet Jesus, our hearts change. Zacchaeus didn't have to give away his money - he WANTED to because Jesus's love changed him! Third, it shows us that Jesus came for EVERYONE - not just the "good" people, but for people who know they need help. And finally, it reminds us that being short or overlooked by others doesn't matter to Jesus. Zacchaeus was too short to see over the crowd, but Jesus saw him! Jesus always sees you, knows your name, and wants a relationship with you. Jesus is still seeking and saving the lost today - and that includes you!
Big idea: God is always with us and loves us very much!
