Story 38 · Ages 6–12
Walking on Water - Don't Be Afraid
Jesus walks on water and helps Peter do the same.
It had been an incredibly busy day! Jesus had just fed more than 5,000 people with only five loaves of bread and two fish! The crowd was so amazed that they wanted to make Jesus their king right then and there. But Jesus knew He had a different kind of kingdom to build - not an earthly kingdom, but God's kingdom in people's hearts.
The story
As evening came, Jesus told His disciples to get into their boat and sail across the Sea of Galilee to the other side. "Go ahead without me," Jesus said. "I'll catch up with you later." The disciples were puzzled, but they obeyed. They climbed into their boat and started rowing across the lake.
Meanwhile, Jesus sent the crowds home. Then He did something He loved to do when He needed to talk to His Father - He went up on a mountainside by Himself to pray. As the sun set and darkness fell, Jesus was alone on the mountain, talking with God. Down below, the Sea of Galilee stretched out in the darkness, and somewhere out there, His disciples were rowing across the water.
But the disciples were having trouble! A strong wind had started blowing against them, pushing them backward. They rowed and rowed, fighting against the wind and waves, but they weren't getting very far. The boat rocked back and forth, and the disciples' arms grew tired from rowing. They had been struggling all evening and through most of the night!
It was now very early in the morning - that dark, quiet time just before sunrise when most people are fast asleep. The disciples were exhausted from hours of rowing. They were far from shore, right in the middle of the lake. Suddenly, through the darkness and the spray of the waves, they saw something that made their hearts nearly stop beating.
A figure was walking toward them - walking ON TOP of the water! With each step, the person walked on the waves as if they were solid ground! The disciples squinted through the darkness. This couldn't be real! People don't walk on water!
"It's a ghost!" someone shouted in terror. The disciples screamed! They were already exhausted and scared from the storm, and now this! They huddled together in the boat, shaking with fear.
But then they heard a familiar voice calling out through the wind: "Take courage! It is I! Don't be afraid!" It was Jesus! Somehow, Jesus was walking across the water to reach them!
Peter, who was always bold and quick to speak, shouted back through the wind, "Lord, if it's really You, tell me to come to You on the water!"
Jesus called out one simple word: "Come!"
Peter didn't hesitate! His heart pounding with excitement and faith, Peter climbed over the side of the boat. He put one foot on the water - and it held him! He put his other foot down - and he was standing on top of the water! Peter was actually walking on water, just like Jesus!
The other disciples watched in amazement as Peter walked across the waves toward Jesus. One step, two steps, three steps - Peter was doing it! The water held him up like solid ground! This was incredible! Peter's eyes were fixed on Jesus, and as long as he looked at Jesus, he could walk on water!
But then Peter made a mistake. He took his eyes off Jesus and looked around at the strong wind and the big waves. Suddenly, he remembered that what he was doing was impossible! Fear rushed into his heart. "What am I doing? People can't walk on water!" he thought. And the moment he doubted, he began to sink!
"Lord, save me!" Peter cried out as he went down into the water.
Immediately - in that very instant - Jesus reached out and caught Peter's hand. Jesus pulled him up out of the water and held him steady. Jesus looked at Peter and said gently, "You of little faith! Why did you doubt?"
It wasn't a mean scolding. Jesus was teaching Peter an important lesson. Peter HAD faith - he had climbed out of the boat when the other disciples stayed inside! But when he took his eyes off Jesus and looked at his problems instead, his faith wavered and fear took over.
Jesus and Peter walked back to the boat together. As soon as they climbed in, something amazing happened - the wind immediately stopped! One moment it was blowing hard, and the next moment, everything was calm and still. The disciples looked at Jesus in absolute wonder and awe.
They all fell down and worshiped Jesus, saying, "Truly, You are the Son of God!" They had seen Jesus do many miracles before, but this - walking on water, calming the storm with His presence - this showed them that Jesus wasn't just a good teacher or a great prophet. He was God Himself!
The boat sailed smoothly the rest of the way across the lake. As the sun rose, they reached the shore safely. But the disciples would never forget that early morning when they learned such important lessons!
Remember this
“But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid.”
What did we learn?
This amazing story teaches us so much! First, it shows us that Jesus is truly God - only God has power over nature like this! Second, it teaches us that Jesus comes to us in our hardest times. The disciples were struggling all night, and Jesus came to them in their moment of need. He does the same for us! Third, it teaches us about faith. Peter was able to do the impossible - walk on water - as long as he kept his eyes on Jesus! But when he looked at the scary waves instead of at Jesus, he began to sink. The same is true for us! When we face big problems (like those scary waves), we need to keep looking at Jesus instead of staring at our problems. If we focus on how big our problems are, we'll be filled with fear. But if we focus on how big and powerful Jesus is, we can have faith and courage! And finally, this story shows us that even when we doubt and start to sink, Jesus is right there to catch us! He's always ready to save us when we call out to Him. So keep your eyes on Jesus, trust Him even when things seem impossible, and remember - He's always there to catch you when you fall!
