Story 53 · Ages 6–12
Ruth and Naomi - True Friendship
Ruth shows amazing loyalty and love to her mother-in-law Naomi.
In the land of Moab, there lived a woman named Naomi. She had moved there with her husband and two sons when there was no food in Israel. Her sons had married two wonderful women - Ruth and Orpah. But then something very sad happened. Naomi's husband died, and then both of her sons died too. Naomi felt so alone and broken-hearted.
The story
"I must go back home to Bethlehem," Naomi said through her tears. "There's nothing left for me here." Ruth and Orpah started walking with her, but Naomi stopped them on the road. "You should go back to your own families," she told them gently. "You've been so kind to me, but you're young. You should stay here and start new lives."
Orpah hugged Naomi goodbye with tears in her eyes and turned back. But Ruth held on tight to Naomi's hand. "Please don't make me leave you!" Ruth said with determination in her voice. "Where you go, I will go. Where you stay, I will stay. Your people will be my people, and your God will be my God."
Naomi looked into Ruth's eyes and saw true love there. This young woman was choosing to stay with her, even though it meant leaving everything she knew. They walked together all the way to Bethlehem. When they arrived, the whole town was excited! "Is this really Naomi?" the women asked. But Naomi felt so sad she said, "Don't call me Naomi anymore. Call me Mara, which means bitter, because life has been so hard."
Ruth and Naomi were very poor. They had no money and no food. "Don't worry," Ruth said bravely. "I'll take care of us!" It was harvest time, and Ruth knew that God's law said poor people could pick up leftover grain in the fields. So early in the morning, Ruth went to work in a field that belonged to a kind man named Boaz.
Ruth worked hard all day long, bending down to pick up every piece of grain she could find. The sun was hot, but she didn't stop. Boaz noticed her and asked his workers, "Who is that hard-working young woman?" They told him, "That's Ruth from Moab. She came here with Naomi and asked permission to pick up grain. She's been working non-stop since early morning!"
Boaz walked over to Ruth with a warm smile. "Stay here in my fields," he told her kindly. "I've heard about how you left your own country to take care of Naomi. That was very brave and loving. May God bless you for your kindness!" Ruth was so surprised and grateful. "Why are you being so kind to me?" she asked. "I'm just a foreigner here."
"You've shown great love to Naomi," Boaz replied. "Anyone can see what a good person you are." From that day on, Boaz made sure Ruth could gather plenty of grain. He even told his workers to leave extra stalks for her on purpose! Every evening, Ruth brought the grain home to Naomi, and they had more than enough food.
Naomi's sad face began to smile again. "God hasn't forgotten us after all!" she said joyfully. "Boaz is actually one of our relatives. He could be our family redeemer - someone who helps family members in need." Naomi had a wonderful idea. In their culture, a close relative could marry a widow to take care of her and continue the family name.
One day, Boaz went to the town gate where important business was done. He gathered the town leaders and another relative who had first rights to help Naomi's family. "I can't take on this responsibility," the other relative said. So Boaz stood up and announced to everyone, "I will take care of Naomi's family. I will marry Ruth!"
All the people cheered! "May your family be blessed like the great families of Israel!" they shouted. Boaz and Ruth got married, and they were so happy together. Soon they had a baby boy, and Naomi held her grandson with tears of joy streaming down her face. "God has brought me from sadness to such great joy!" she said.
The women of Bethlehem gathered around, celebrating with Naomi. "Look how Ruth loves you!" they said. "She is worth more than seven sons! And now you have a grandson to carry on your family." They named the baby Obed, and he grew up to be the grandfather of King David! Ruth's loyal love had not only blessed Naomi - it was part of God's great plan that would lead to Jesus being born!
Remember this
“And Ruth said, Intreat me not to leave thee, or to return from following after thee: for whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge: thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God: Intreat: or, Be not against me”
What did we learn?
Ruth's story teaches us that true love means staying faithful even when things are hard. Ruth could have taken the easy path and stayed in her comfortable home. But instead, she chose to stick with Naomi, no matter what. God blessed Ruth's faithful love in amazing ways - she became part of Jesus' own family line! When we show loyal love to others, God sees it and blesses it, often in ways we never expect.
Big idea: God is always with us and loves us very much!
