Story 9 · Ages 6–12

Tower of Babel - Pride and Confusion

People try to build a tower to heaven, but God confuses their language and scatters them.

After the flood, Noah's family grew and grew! Soon there were many people on earth again. They all spoke the same language and could understand each other perfectly.

The story

The people traveled east and found a flat plain. They said, "Let's stop here and build a city!" They made bricks from mud and baked them hard. They used tar instead of mortar to hold the bricks together.

But then they had a proud idea. They said, "Let's build a tower that reaches all the way to heaven! Then everyone will know how great WE are! We'll be famous! And we'll never be scattered across the earth!"

They forgot about God! Instead of thanking God for saving them through Noah, they wanted to make themselves great. They wanted to be as powerful as God!

So they started building. Higher and higher the tower went! Up, up, up!

God came down to see the city and the tower. God said, "These people are working together, all speaking one language. If they can do this, there's nothing they won't be able to do - even very wrong things! I will confuse their language so they can't understand each other."

Suddenly, while the workers were building, something strange happened! One worker said something in a language his friend couldn't understand! "What did you say?" But the friend's answer sounded like gibberish!

People started speaking in different languages! No one could understand each other! The builder couldn't understand the brick maker! The foreman couldn't give instructions! Everything became chaotic and confusing!

The people stopped building. They couldn't work together anymore. The groups that spoke the same language moved away together. Soon people were scattered all across the earth - exactly what they were trying to prevent!

The city was called Babel, which sounds like the word for "confusion" in Hebrew. The tower was never finished. It stood there as a reminder: when people are proud and forget God, their plans fail.

Remember this

“Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.”

Proverbs 16:18 · KJV

What did we learn?

This story teaches us to be humble and remember that God is God - not us! We should use our talents to honor Him, not to make ourselves famous. God blesses those who are humble and remember that He is the one who gives us everything!
