Story 32 · Ages 7–12
Temptation in the Desert - Overcoming Evil
Jesus is tempted by Satan but resists using God's Word.
Right after Jesus was baptized and God's voice said, "This is my beloved Son," the Holy Spirit led Jesus into the wilderness. This wasn't a fun camping trip - it was a lonely, dry, rocky desert with no people, no food, and no shelter. Jesus was going there to fast and pray, preparing for His important work.
The story
Jesus spent forty days and forty nights in the desert without eating anything! Can you imagine? Forty days is more than a whole month! His stomach must have been so empty. He was incredibly hungry, thirsty, and tired. He was all alone in the hot desert.
This was when Satan decided to attack. Satan is God's enemy, the devil, who tries to get people to sin and turn away from God. He saw that Jesus was weak and hungry, so he thought this would be the perfect time to tempt Him. Satan wanted to stop Jesus from saving the world!
Satan came to Jesus and said his first temptation: "If You are really the Son of God, turn these stones into bread!" He was trying to get Jesus to use His power selfishly. After all, Jesus WAS hungry! And Jesus DID have the power to turn stones into bread! It would be so easy!
But Jesus knew this was wrong. He didn't come to earth to use God's power for His own comfort. He came to obey God perfectly! So Jesus answered Satan with words from the Bible. He said, "It is written: 'Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.'" Jesus was saying that obeying God is more important than having food!
Satan didn't give up. He tried a second temptation. He took Jesus to the holy city of Jerusalem, to the highest point of the temple. They stood at the very top, looking down at the courtyard far below. It was REALLY high up!
Satan said, "If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down! After all, the Bible says, 'He will command His angels to catch You so You won't even hurt Your foot on a stone.'" Satan was actually quoting Scripture! But he was twisting it and using it wrongly. He wanted Jesus to test God and show off His power.
But Jesus saw right through this trick! He answered, "It is also written: 'Do not put the Lord your God to the test.'" Jesus knew that trusting God doesn't mean doing foolish, dangerous things to see if God will save us. We should obey God, not test Him!
Satan was getting frustrated, but he had one more temptation - the biggest one of all. He took Jesus to a very high mountain. From there, Satan showed Jesus all the kingdoms of the world and all their glory and power. Cities, palaces, armies, treasures - everything!
Satan made Jesus an offer: "I will give You all of this - all the kingdoms, all the power, all the glory - if You will just bow down and worship me!" Satan was offering Jesus a shortcut. Jesus could rule the world right now without having to suffer and die on the cross! All He had to do was worship Satan just once.
This was the biggest test! But Jesus didn't hesitate for even a second. He said firmly, "Away from me, Satan! For it is written: 'Worship the Lord your God, and serve Him only!'" Jesus was absolutely clear - He would NEVER worship Satan! Only God deserves worship!
And you know what happened? Satan had to leave! He had used his three best tricks, and Jesus had defeated every single one using God's Word from the Bible! The devil went away, at least for a while.
Then something beautiful happened. Angels came from heaven to take care of Jesus! They brought Him food and water and ministered to His needs. God took care of His Son after the terrible battle with Satan.
Jesus had won! He had faced Satan's temptations and didn't sin even once! He proved that He was the perfect Savior who could save us from our sins. Where the first Adam failed in the Garden of Eden by giving in to temptation, Jesus - the second Adam - succeeded in the desert by resisting temptation!
This story teaches us so many important lessons! First, it shows us that being tempted is not the same as sinning. Jesus was tempted, but He never sinned! Second, it teaches us how to fight temptation - by knowing and using God's Word, the Bible! Every time Satan tempted Jesus, Jesus answered with Scripture: "It is written..."
Third, this story reminds us that Satan is real and he wants to make us sin. But we don't have to be afraid! Jesus has already defeated Satan! And when we trust in Jesus and use God's Word, we can resist temptation too!
When you feel tempted to do something wrong - to lie, to cheat, to be mean, to disobey - remember Jesus in the desert! Remember that He understands what it's like to be tempted. Remember to pray and ask God for help. Remember to use God's Word! The Bible is like a sword that can defeat the devil's lies!
Remember this
“But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.”
What did we learn?
Jesus showed us that with God's help, we can say no to sin and yes to God! He is our example and our helper. And because Jesus never sinned, He could be the perfect sacrifice to save us from our sins. What a wonderful Savior we have!
Big idea: so many important lessons!
