The Prodigal Son - A Father's Love
A father welcomes home his wayward son with joy and celebration.
Jesus told a story about a father who had two sons. The younger son was restless and wanted adventure. One day, he went to his father and said something shocking: "Father, give me my share of your money now!" Normally, sons only got their inheritance after their father died. This was like saying, "I wish you were dead!" How hurtful!
The story
But the loving father divided his wealth and gave the younger son his share. The son packed his bags, took all his money, and left home. He traveled to a faraway country where nobody knew him.
At first, the young man had a wonderful time! He spent his money on fancy clothes, expensive food, and wild parties. He had lots of new "friends" who loved spending his money. He thought he was having the time of his life!
But soon, all his money was GONE! He had spent every last coin. And guess what? All those "friends" disappeared! Nobody wanted to be around him when he couldn't buy them things anymore.
To make things worse, a terrible famine came to that country. There was no food anywhere! The young man was hungry and desperate. He had to find work, so he got a job feeding pigs. Pigs! For a Jewish boy, this was the worst job imaginable! He was so hungry that even the pigs' food looked good to him. But nobody gave him anything to eat.
One day, sitting in the muddy pigpen, the young man came to his senses. "Wait a minute!" he thought. "My father's servants have plenty of food, and here I am starving! I'll go back home. I'll say, 'Father, I've sinned against heaven and against you. I'm no longer worthy to be called your son. Please, just make me one of your servants.'"
So he got up and started the long journey home. He was dirty, smelly, and dressed in rags. His feet were sore, and his heart was heavy with shame.
But while the son was still a long way off, his father saw him! The father had been watching and waiting every single day, hoping his son would come home. When he saw that familiar figure in the distance, the father's heart leaped with joy!
The father didn't wait for his son to come to him. He lifted up his robes and RAN down the road! When he reached his son, he threw his arms around him and kissed him!
The son started his speech: "Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son..."
But the father wasn't listening to speeches! He called to his servants, "Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him! Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet! Kill the fattened calf and prepare a feast! We're going to celebrate!"
"Why?" the servants asked.
The father said with tears of joy, "Because this son of mine was dead, but now he's alive! He was lost, but now he's found!"
Soon, the house was filled with music and dancing! Everyone was celebrating the son's return!
But the older brother was out in the field working. When he came home and heard the party, he asked a servant, "What's going on?"
"Your brother has come home! Your father is throwing a party because he's home safe and sound!"
The older brother became angry and refused to go in. His father came out and pleaded with him, but the older brother said, "All these years I've worked for you and obeyed you! But you never threw ME a party! Yet when this son of yours comes back after wasting your money, you celebrate!"
The father said gently, "My son, you're always with me, and everything I have is yours. But we HAD to celebrate! Your brother was dead, but he's alive! He was lost, but now he's found!"
Remember this
“For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found. And they began to be merry.”
What did we learn?
This beautiful story shows us how much God loves us! No matter what we've done or how far we've run away from God, He's always watching and waiting for us to come home. And when we turn back to Him, He doesn't scold us or make us earn His love. Instead, He runs to us with open arms, ready to forgive and celebrate! That's how much our Heavenly Father loves YOU!
Big idea: God is always with us and loves us very much!
