Paul's Journeys - Spreading the Good News

Paul travels across the world telling people about Jesus.

After Paul (who used to be called Saul) became a follower of Jesus, he didn't just stay in one place. Oh no! Paul became one of the greatest travelers and adventurers for Jesus the world has ever known! He traveled thousands and thousands of miles - across deserts, over mountains, and across seas - all to tell people the good news about Jesus!

The story

Paul went on at least three major missionary journeys, and each one was filled with amazing stories of God's power, incredible miracles, dangerous adventures, and changed lives! Let's explore some of the exciting things that happened on Paul's journeys!

On his first journey, Paul traveled with his friend Barnabas. They sailed to the island of Cyprus and then to many cities in what is now Turkey. Everywhere they went, Paul would go to the synagogues first and tell the Jewish people that Jesus was the Messiah they had been waiting for! Some people believed, but others got very angry and rejected the message.

In one city called Lystra, Paul healed a man who had been crippled since birth! The man jumped up and started walking and leaping! The people were so amazed that they thought Paul and Barnabas were gods! They even tried to offer sacrifices to them! Paul had to shout, "No, no! We're just men like you! We're telling you about the one true God who made heaven and earth!" But some enemies came and stirred up the crowd. They threw stones at Paul and dragged him out of the city, leaving him for dead! But God protected Paul, and he got up and kept going! Nothing could stop him from sharing Jesus!

On Paul's second journey, God gave him a special dream. In the dream, Paul saw a man from Macedonia (in Greece) begging him, "Come over to Macedonia and help us!" Paul knew this was God's way of telling him to take the good news to Europe! So Paul, along with Silas, Timothy, and Luke, sailed across the sea to Greece.

In the city of Philippi, Paul met a businesswoman named Lydia who sold purple cloth. When she heard Paul preach about Jesus, God opened her heart to believe! She and her whole household were baptized, and she invited Paul and his team to stay at her house. The first church in Europe had begun!

But then something scary happened in Philippi. There was a slave girl who had an evil spirit that let her tell fortunes. Her owners made money from her fortune-telling. When Paul commanded the evil spirit to leave her in Jesus' name, the spirit came out and she was free! But her owners were furious because they couldn't make money from her anymore. They grabbed Paul and Silas and dragged them to the authorities!

Paul and Silas were beaten with rods - hit many times on their backs! Then they were thrown into the innermost cell of the prison, and their feet were locked in wooden stocks so they couldn't move. It was dark, cold, and painful. Most people would have been crying and complaining. But guess what Paul and Silas did? At midnight, they were singing hymns and praising God! The other prisoners were listening in amazement!

Suddenly, there was a violent earthquake! The prison foundations shook! All the doors flew open, and everyone's chains came loose! The jailer woke up and saw the doors open. He thought all the prisoners had escaped! He was about to kill himself because he would be punished for losing the prisoners. But Paul shouted, "Don't harm yourself! We're all still here!"

The jailer was trembling. He fell down before Paul and Silas and cried out, "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?" And Paul gave him the most beautiful answer: "Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved - you and your household!" That very night, the jailer and his whole family believed in Jesus and were baptized! They went from being enemies to being brothers in Christ! The jailer even washed Paul and Silas's wounds and gave them a meal. What had started as the worst night turned into a night of great joy!

Paul continued traveling to many cities in Greece - Thessalonica, Berea, Athens, and Corinth. In Athens, Paul saw that the whole city was full of idols - statues of fake gods everywhere. His heart was broken for the people who didn't know the true God. So he went to the Areopagus - a place where philosophers gathered - and he preached an amazing sermon about the "Unknown God" they had an altar for. "This God you worship without knowing," Paul said, "is the God I'm telling you about! He made the world and everything in it!" Some people mocked him, but others believed!

On Paul's third journey, incredible miracles happened! In the city of Ephesus, God did extraordinary miracles through Paul. Even handkerchiefs and aprons that had touched Paul were taken to sick people, and they were healed! Evil spirits came out of people! The power of Jesus was so evident that many people who practiced magic and sorcery brought their magic books - very expensive books - and burned them in a huge bonfire! They wanted nothing to do with evil anymore!

But Paul also faced terrible dangers. In Ephesus, the silversmiths who made statues of the false goddess Artemis got angry because so many people were becoming Christians and not buying their idols anymore. They started a huge riot! A mob of thousands of people filled the theater, shouting for two hours, "Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!" Paul's life was in danger, but God protected him!

Paul faced dangers everywhere he went. He wrote about it later: "Five times I received forty lashes minus one from the Jewish leaders. Three times I was beaten with rods. Once I was stoned. Three times I was shipwrecked. I spent a night and a day in the open sea! I have been in danger from rivers, from bandits, from my own people, from Gentiles, in the city, in the country, at sea, and from false believers. I have been hungry and thirsty, cold and naked."

Wow! Paul went through SO much suffering! Why did he keep going? Why didn't he just give up and go home? Because Paul loved Jesus SO much, and he wanted everyone to know about the Savior who had changed his life! He said, "I consider my life worth nothing to me; my only aim is to finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me - the task of testifying to the good news of God's grace!"

Everywhere Paul went, he started churches - communities of believers who loved Jesus and loved each other. He wrote letters to these churches (many of these letters are books in our New Testament today - Romans, Corinthians, Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, and Thessalonians!). In these letters, Paul encouraged the believers, taught them about Jesus, and helped them grow in their faith.

Paul's greatest joy was seeing people come to know Jesus! He saw Jews and Gentiles, slaves and free people, rich and poor - all becoming part of God's family! He saw the gospel spreading from city to city, from country to country! He saw lives being transformed by the power of Jesus!

Eventually, Paul was arrested and sent to Rome as a prisoner. But even in chains, Paul kept preaching about Jesus! He wrote letters from prison that encouraged thousands of Christians. He told everyone who would listen about the love and grace of Jesus Christ!

Paul's journeys changed the world! Because of his faithfulness, millions of people heard about Jesus. Churches were planted all across the Roman Empire. The message of the gospel spread like wildfire! And it all started because one man said "yes" to Jesus and was willing to go wherever God sent him, no matter how hard or dangerous it was!

Remember this

“And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.”

Mark 16:15 · KJV

What did we learn?

Paul's story teaches us that following Jesus is an adventure! It might not always be easy - there might be difficulties and challenges. But when we obey God and share His love with others, amazing things happen! God can use you too, just like He used Paul! You might not travel to faraway countries (though you might!), but you can tell your friends, family, and neighbors about Jesus right where you are! Every Christian is on a mission to share the good news of Jesus' love! What an exciting journey we get to be part of!

Big idea: God is always with us and loves us very much!
