Story 45 · Ages 5–12

Palm Sunday - The King Arrives

Jesus rides into Jerusalem as people wave palm branches and shout praises.

It was almost time for the Passover festival, and thousands of people were traveling to Jerusalem to celebrate. Jesus and His disciples were walking toward the great city too. As they came near Jerusalem, Jesus stopped at a village called Bethphage, near the Mount of Olives.

The story

Jesus called two of His disciples and gave them special instructions. "Go into that village ahead of you," He said, pointing. "As soon as you enter it, you'll find a young donkey tied there - a colt that has never been ridden. Untie it and bring it here. If anyone asks what you're doing, just say, 'The Lord needs it,' and they'll let you take it."

The disciples went and found everything exactly as Jesus said! There was the donkey, tied near a doorway. As they were untying it, some people standing there asked, "What are you doing? Why are you untying that donkey?"

The disciples answered just as Jesus told them: "The Lord needs it." And the people let them take it!

The disciples brought the donkey to Jesus. They spread their cloaks on its back to make a soft seat, and Jesus sat on it. This was very important! Hundreds of years earlier, a prophet named Zechariah had written, "Your king comes to you, gentle and riding on a donkey." Now that prophecy was coming true!

As Jesus began riding toward Jerusalem, something wonderful started to happen! People began to recognize Him. "It's Jesus!" they shouted. "The one who heals the sick and does miracles!" More and more people joined the crowd!

The people were so excited! They took off their cloaks and laid them on the road in front of Jesus, making a carpet of honor - the way people treated kings! Others ran to cut branches from palm trees and laid them on the road too. The fresh green branches waved in the breeze!

Children waved palm branches in the air and danced along the road! Adults shouted praises! The whole crowd began to sing and cheer!

"Hosanna! Hosanna!" they shouted. (Hosanna means "Save us now!" It was a joyful praise to God!) "Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord! Blessed is the King of Israel! Hosanna in the highest!"

The noise echoed off the hills! It was like the biggest, happiest parade you can imagine! People in the city heard the commotion and came running to see what was happening. "Who is this?" they asked.

The crowds answered, "This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth in Galilee! He's the one who does miracles!"

Some religious leaders in the crowd were upset. They didn't like all this attention on Jesus! They pushed through the crowd and said to Jesus, "Teacher, tell your disciples to be quiet! This is too much!"

But Jesus answered, "I tell you, if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out!" Nothing could stop this celebration!

As Jesus rode closer to Jerusalem, He could see the whole beautiful city spread out before Him. Suddenly, Jesus began to cry. He knew that many people in Jerusalem would reject Him. He knew that hard times were coming for the city. Even though the people were celebrating now, Jesus knew what was in their hearts.

But the crowd kept celebrating! Jesus rode into Jerusalem with crowds cheering all around Him. The children kept singing, "Hosanna to the Son of David!" The whole city was buzzing with excitement!

Remember this

“And they that went before, and they that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna; Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord:”

Mark 11:9 · KJV

What did we learn?

This special day reminds us that Jesus is our King! He didn't come riding on a war horse like earthly kings. He came humbly, riding on a donkey, showing us that He is a King of peace and love. And just like the people welcomed Jesus that day, we can welcome Jesus into our hearts! We can praise Him and celebrate Him every day, not just on Palm Sunday!

Big idea: God is always with us and loves us very much!
