Story 67 · Ages 6–12

Woman at the Well - Living Water

Jesus offers living water to a Samaritan woman.

Jesus and His disciples were traveling from Judea to Galilee, and they had to go through Samaria. Now, most Jewish people avoided Samaria! Jews and Samaritans had hated each other for hundreds of years because of religious and cultural differences. But Jesus didn't avoid Samaria - He went right through it because He had a special appointment with someone who needed Him!

The story

Around noon, Jesus came to a town in Samaria called Sychar, near the field that Jacob had given to his son Joseph long ago. Jacob's well was there, and Jesus, tired from the journey and the heat of the day, sat down by the well to rest. His disciples went into town to buy food, leaving Jesus alone at the well.

While Jesus was resting, a Samaritan woman came to draw water from the well. This was unusual! Most women came to the well in the cool of the morning or evening, when they could chat with their friends. But this woman came at noon, in the heat of the day, when she knew no one else would be there. She was probably trying to avoid other people because of her reputation in the town.

Jesus did something that shocked her! He said, "Will you give me a drink?" The woman was amazed! Jewish men didn't talk to women in public, especially not Samaritan women! She said to Jesus, "You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?" She knew that Jews and Samaritans didn't associate with each other!

Jesus answered her with mysterious words: "If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water!" Living water? What did that mean? The woman looked at the deep well and said, "Sir, you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where can you get this living water? Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it himself?"

Jesus said something beautiful: "Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life!" Jesus wasn't talking about ordinary water! He was talking about spiritual water - the Holy Spirit and eternal life that He offers!

The woman didn't understand yet, but she was interested! "Sir," she said, "give me this water so that I won't get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water!" She was thinking practically - how nice it would be to never have to make this daily trip to the well!

Then Jesus did something surprising. He said, "Go, call your husband and come back." The woman's heart probably sank. "I have no husband," she replied quietly. Jesus said, "You are right when you say you have no husband. The fact is, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have just said is quite true!"

The woman was stunned! This stranger knew all about her life - her failed marriages, her current situation, her pain and shame! But Jesus wasn't bringing this up to condemn her or make her feel bad. He was showing her that He knew her completely and cared about her anyway!

"Sir," the woman said, "I can see that you are a prophet!" Then she tried to change the subject to a religious debate about where people should worship - on this mountain or in Jerusalem? But Jesus brought the conversation back to what really mattered. He explained, "God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth!"

The woman said, "I know that Messiah is coming. When he comes, he will explain everything to us." And then Jesus said the most amazing words: "I, the one speaking to you - I am he!" Jesus was telling this Samaritan woman - someone most people looked down on - that He was the Messiah! He was revealing His true identity to her!

Just then, Jesus's disciples returned from town. They were shocked to find Jesus talking to a woman, especially a Samaritan woman! But they didn't dare ask Him why. Meanwhile, the woman was so excited that she left her water jar at the well and hurried back to town! She had come to the well to avoid people, but now she couldn't wait to tell everyone about Jesus!

"Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did!" she exclaimed to the people in town. "Could this be the Messiah?" Her testimony was so compelling that many people from the town came out to see Jesus for themselves! They urged Him to stay with them, and Jesus stayed two days, teaching them about the kingdom of God!

Because of the woman's testimony, many Samaritans believed in Jesus! And after hearing Jesus themselves, even more believed! They said to the woman, "We no longer believe just because of what you said; now we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this man really is the Savior of the world!"

What an amazing transformation! The woman who came to the well alone, ashamed, trying to avoid people, became the first missionary to Samaria! She went from hiding from others to boldly telling everyone about Jesus! She went from being thirsty and empty inside to being filled with living water! She went from being rejected by society to being accepted completely by Jesus!

This beautiful story teaches us so many lessons! First, Jesus seeks out the people that others reject! When everyone else avoided Samaritans and looked down on women with bad reputations, Jesus went out of His way to have a personal conversation with this woman! No one is too far from God's love! Second, Jesus knows everything about us - all our mistakes, all our shame, all our secrets - and He loves us anyway! He doesn't come to condemn us but to offer us living water!

Third, what Jesus offers is far better than anything this world can give! Physical water quenches our thirst for a little while, but then we get thirsty again. But Jesus offers living water - the Holy Spirit dwelling in us - that satisfies our souls forever! Fourth, when we meet Jesus and receive His living water, we can't help but tell others! The woman left her water jar and ran to tell everyone! Fifth, Jesus breaks down all barriers - race, gender, social status, reputation - to bring people into God's family! The gospel is for everyone!

Remember this

“But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.”

John 4:14 · KJV
