The Lost Sheep - God Searches for Us
A shepherd leaves ninety-nine sheep to find the one that is lost.
One day, many tax collectors and sinners were gathering around Jesus to listen to Him teach. They loved hearing Jesus because He was kind to them and didn't treat them like they were worthless. But this made the religious leaders - the Pharisees and teachers of the law - very upset!
The story
The Pharisees whispered to each other with frowns on their faces. "Look at this!" they complained. "Jesus welcomes sinners and even eats with them! A good religious teacher shouldn't spend time with such terrible people!" They thought that holy people should only be friends with other holy people.
Jesus heard what they were saying. He knew exactly what they were thinking. So Jesus decided to tell them a story - a parable - to help them understand why He spent time with people others rejected. Jesus wanted them to see God's heart!
"Imagine this," Jesus began. "Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep. That's a big flock! You're a shepherd, and these sheep are your responsibility. Every morning, you lead them out to grassy hillsides where they can eat. Every evening, you bring them back safely to the sheepfold - the pen where they sleep."
Everyone listening could picture this. Many of them had seen shepherds leading their flocks through the countryside.
"One evening," Jesus continued, "as you're bringing the sheep home, you count them to make sure they're all there. Ninety-seven, ninety-eight, ninety-nine... wait, that's not right! You count again. Ninety-nine. One sheep is missing! One of your sheep is lost somewhere out there in the wilderness!"
"Now here's my question," Jesus said, looking around at the crowd. "Won't you leave the ninety-nine sheep safely in the pen and go out to search for the one lost sheep? Won't you look everywhere until you find it?"
The people nodded. Of course a good shepherd would do that! Every sheep was valuable! Every sheep mattered to the shepherd!
Jesus painted the picture with His words: "So you grab your staff and head back out into the night. It's getting dark, but you don't give up. You climb rocky hills, searching. You look behind bushes and boulders. You call out for your lost sheep. And you keep searching and searching until finally - there! You hear a faint 'baaa' in the distance!"
"You rush toward the sound, your heart pounding. And there, caught in some thorny bushes, cold and scared, is your lost sheep! The little sheep is exhausted from struggling and crying out. It's frightened and alone. But now you're here!"
"You gently free the sheep from the thorns. The sheep is too tired to walk, so what do you do? You don't scold it for wandering off. You don't leave it to walk home by itself. No! You joyfully lift that sheep up and place it on your shoulders! Even though you're tired from searching, you carry it all the way home because you love that sheep so much!"
Jesus smiled as He continued the story. "And when you get home, you're so happy that you can't keep it to yourself! You call out to your friends and neighbors, 'Come over! Celebrate with me! I found my lost sheep!' And everyone rejoices together!"
Then Jesus looked at the Pharisees - those religious leaders who had been complaining about Him spending time with sinners. Jesus said something beautiful and important:
"I tell you, in the same way, there is more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous people who don't need to repent!"
Wow! What was Jesus saying? He was teaching that God is like that shepherd! Every single person matters to God - not just the "good" people, but EVERYONE! When someone who is lost comes back to God, when someone who has done wrong turns away from sin and turns to God, all of heaven throws a party! The angels celebrate! God Himself rejoices!
The tax collectors and sinners listening to Jesus felt tears in their eyes. They had always been told they were too bad for God to love. But here was Jesus, telling them that God searches for them! God wants them back! God will celebrate when they come home to Him! They weren't worthless after all - they were like precious lost sheep that the Shepherd never stops looking for!
This wonderful parable teaches us so many important truths! First, it shows us how much God loves each person. Out of a hundred sheep, the shepherd could have said, "Well, I still have ninety-nine. That's good enough." But no! Every single sheep mattered! And every single person matters to God - including you! You're not just a number in a crowd. God knows you, loves you, and if you wander away, He will come searching for you!
Second, it teaches us about God's heart. God doesn't wait for lost people to find their way back on their own. He actively searches for them! Jesus came to earth to seek and save the lost - that's what He was doing when He spent time with tax collectors and sinners. He wasn't approving of their sin; He was rescuing them from it!
Third, this parable shows us that heaven celebrates when someone comes to God! Maybe you feel like you've wandered too far from God. Maybe you think you've made too many mistakes. But this story tells us that God is searching for you, and when you turn back to Him, all of heaven will rejoice! You're that important to God!
Fourth, it teaches us not to be like the Pharisees who complained. The Pharisees were like the ninety-nine sheep safe in the pen - they thought they were righteous and didn't need saving. They were so focused on following rules that they forgot about love and compassion. They didn't rejoice when lost people were found; instead, they complained! But God wants us to have His heart - to care about lost people and celebrate when they come home!
And finally, this story shows us what Jesus is like. Jesus is the Good Shepherd who searches for lost sheep. He knows when even one of us is missing. He leaves the comfort of heaven to come find us. He gently rescues us when we're caught in the thorns of sin and trouble. He carries us home on His shoulders. And He celebrates when we're safe with Him again!
Remember this
“And when he cometh home, he calleth together his friends and neighbours, saying unto them, Rejoice with me; for I have found my sheep which was lost.”
What did we learn?
Are you ever feeling lost, alone, or far from God? Remember this story! God hasn't forgotten about you. He's searching for you right now. He wants to bring you home. And when you turn to Him and say, "God, I need You. Please forgive me and help me," all of heaven will celebrate! You matter that much to God. You are His precious lost sheep, and He will never stop searching until He brings you safely home!
Big idea: God is searching for you, and when you turn back to Him, all of heaven will rejoice!
