The Last Supper - Remember Me
Jesus shares a final meal with His disciples before His death.
It was Thursday evening, the night before Jesus would die on the cross. Jesus knew exactly what was about to happen, but His disciples didn't understand yet. Jesus wanted to spend one last special meal with His twelve closest friends before the hard days ahead.
The story
Jesus sent Peter and John into Jerusalem with specific instructions. "Go and prepare the Passover meal for us," He said. "When you enter the city, you'll see a man carrying a jar of water. Follow him to the house he enters, and say to the owner, 'The Teacher asks: Where is the guest room where I can eat the Passover with my disciples?' He will show you a large upper room, all furnished and ready. Prepare our meal there."
Everything happened exactly as Jesus said! Peter and John found the room and prepared a beautiful Passover dinner - roasted lamb, unleavened bread, bitter herbs, and wine. This was a special meal that Jewish people ate every year to remember how God rescued them from slavery in Egypt long ago.
When evening came, Jesus arrived with all twelve disciples. They reclined at the table together. But the atmosphere was different tonight. Jesus seemed sad, and the disciples felt it.
Jesus looked around at His disciples with deep love and said, "I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer."
Then Jesus did something that shocked everyone! He got up from the table, wrapped a towel around His waist, poured water into a basin, and began to wash His disciples' feet! This was a job that servants did, not teachers! Peter was so surprised he said, "Lord, you shouldn't wash MY feet!" But Jesus explained, "If I don't wash you, you have no part with me." Jesus was showing them that He came to serve, and they should serve others too.
After Jesus returned to the table, He became very serious. "One of you will betray me," He said quietly. "One of you eating with me right now will hand me over to my enemies."
The disciples were shocked and sad! "Surely not I, Lord?" they each asked. They couldn't imagine who would do such a terrible thing!
Jesus said, "It is one of you twelve, one who is dipping bread into the bowl with me." He was talking about Judas, one of His disciples. Judas had already made a plan to help Jesus' enemies arrest Him. Soon, Judas slipped out into the darkness.
Then Jesus picked up the bread. He thanked God for it, broke it into pieces, and gave it to His disciples. "Take and eat," Jesus said. "This is my body, which is given for you. Do this to remember me."
The disciples ate the bread, but they didn't fully understand what Jesus meant. He was telling them that His body would soon be broken - He would die for them!
After supper, Jesus took the cup of wine. He gave thanks and passed it around the table. "Drink from it, all of you," He said. "This is my blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this to remember me."
Jesus was explaining that He would die to take the punishment for our sins. His blood would be poured out so that we could be forgiven! It was like a new Passover - Jesus was the Lamb who would rescue us from sin, just as the Passover lamb rescued Israel from Egypt.
Jesus wanted His followers to keep doing this meal together after He was gone - to eat bread and drink the cup together, remembering His sacrifice. Today, Christians all around the world still do this! We call it Communion or the Lord's Supper.
Then Jesus and His disciples sang a hymn together. Jesus talked to them about many important things - about loving each other, staying connected to Him like branches on a vine, and how the Holy Spirit would come to help them.
As the evening ended, they walked out to the Mount of Olives. The most important weekend in history was about to begin. Jesus was ready to give His life for the people He loved - for His disciples, and for YOU!
Remember this
“And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me.”
What did we learn?
Whenever Christians share Communion together, we remember this special night. We remember that Jesus loves us SO much that He was willing to die for us. And we look forward to the day when we'll eat and drink with Jesus again in heaven! Every time we take Communion, we're saying, "Thank You, Jesus! We remember what You did for us!"
Big idea: God is always with us and loves us very much!
