Story 15 · Ages 6–12

Jacob's Ladder - God's Presence Everywhere

Jacob dreams of a ladder to heaven with angels and receives God's promise of protection.

Jacob had to run away from home because his brother Esau was so angry with him. Jacob had tricked Esau out of their father's special blessing, and now Esau wanted to hurt him!

The story

So Jacob left his comfortable home and traveled to a faraway land to stay with his uncle Laban. As the sun was setting on his first day of travel, Jacob found himself in the middle of nowhere - just rocks and wilderness. He was tired, lonely, and probably scared. He picked up a stone to use as a pillow and lay down to sleep under the stars.

That night, Jacob had the most amazing dream! He saw a giant stairway - like a ladder - that reached all the way from earth to heaven! And on this ladder, angels were going up and down, up and down!

Then at the top of the ladder, Jacob saw God Himself! God spoke to Jacob and said, "I am the LORD, the God of your grandfather Abraham and your father Isaac. I am giving you and your family the land you're lying on. Your family will spread out in all directions, and all the families of the earth will be blessed through you!"

God continued with an amazing promise: "I am with you! I will watch over you wherever you go, and I will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I have done everything I promised you!"

When Jacob woke up, he was amazed! He said, "Surely the LORD is in this place, and I didn't even know it!" He was afraid but in a good way - filled with wonder. He said, "How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God! This is the gate of heaven!"

Jacob took the stone he had used as a pillow and set it up as a memorial. He poured oil on it and named that place Bethel, which means "House of God."

Then Jacob made a promise to God: "If God will be with me and watch over me on this journey, and if He brings me back safely to my father's house, then the LORD will be my God!"

Remember this

“And Jacob awaked out of his sleep, and he said, Surely the LORD is in this place; and I knew it not.”

What did we learn?

This story shows us that even when we feel alone and far from home, God is with us! We can't see angels, but they are real, and God watches over us wherever we go. Just like Jacob learned, God is present even in the places we least expect Him!
