Calling the Disciples - Follow Me

Jesus calls twelve ordinary men to become His disciples.

After Jesus defeated Satan's temptations in the desert, He began His ministry in Galilee. He was teaching in synagogues, healing sick people, and telling everyone the good news: "The Kingdom of God is near! Repent and believe the good news!" People were amazed by His teaching and His miracles!

The story

But Jesus knew He couldn't do this work alone. He needed helpers - men who would learn from Him, travel with Him, and eventually carry on His mission after He returned to heaven. So Jesus began to choose His disciples - special followers who would be with Him every day.

One day, Jesus was walking by the Sea of Galilee. The water was sparkling in the sunshine, and fishermen were working along the shore. Jesus saw two brothers, Simon (who would later be called Peter) and Andrew. They were casting their fishing nets into the water. These brothers were professional fishermen - they had been fishing their whole lives!

Jesus called out to them: "Come, follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men!" What an interesting thing to say! Jesus meant that instead of catching fish, they would help catch people - bringing them into God's Kingdom by telling them about Jesus!

Simon and Andrew looked at each other. This was a huge decision! If they followed Jesus, they would have to leave their fishing business, their boats, their normal lives. But there was something special about Jesus - something that made them want to follow Him! Right away - immediately - they dropped their nets and followed Jesus! They didn't say, "Wait, let us think about it." They trusted Jesus and went!

Jesus walked a little farther along the shore and saw two more brothers - James and John. They were in a boat with their father Zebedee, mending their fishing nets. Fishermen always had to repair their nets after fishing trips! Jesus called to James and John, too.

And guess what? They also left immediately! They left the boat and even left their father there with the hired helpers! They followed Jesus! These four fishermen - Peter, Andrew, James, and John - were the first disciples Jesus called. But Jesus would choose eight more to make twelve disciples total.

Jesus called Matthew, a tax collector. Most people hated tax collectors because they worked for the Romans and often cheated people by taking extra money. But Jesus saw Matthew sitting at his tax booth and simply said, "Follow Me." Matthew got up, left everything, and followed Jesus! He even threw a big party so his friends could meet Jesus!

Jesus called Philip, and Philip was so excited that he immediately went and found his friend Nathanael. Philip said, "We have found the Messiah - the one Moses and the prophets wrote about! His name is Jesus of Nazareth!" At first Nathanael was doubtful - "Can anything good come from Nazareth?" he asked. But when he met Jesus, Jesus knew all about him! Nathanael believed and followed Jesus too.

Jesus chose Thomas, who would later be called "Doubting Thomas" because he struggled with questions. Jesus chose Bartholomew, James (son of Alphaeus), Thaddaeus, and Simon the Zealot. Each one had a different personality and background, but Jesus called them all!

The last disciple Jesus chose was Judas Iscariot. Sadly, Judas would later betray Jesus. But at the beginning, he was part of the group. Jesus even knew what Judas would do, but He still gave Judas the chance to follow Him.

So Jesus had His twelve disciples! What a diverse group they were! Four were fishermen - rough, strong men who worked hard with their hands. One was a tax collector who had been rich but dishonest. One was a zealot who wanted to fight against Rome. They were all so different! But Jesus chose each one for a special reason.

These twelve men spent every day with Jesus for the next three years. They watched Him heal blind people, make lame people walk, and even raise dead people back to life! They heard Him teach in ways that amazed everyone. They saw Him be kind to children, talk to women (which was unusual for that time), and love outcasts and sinners. They watched Him pray early in the morning and late at night.

Jesus taught His disciples special lessons. He explained His parables to them. He sent them out to preach and heal in nearby towns, giving them power to do miracles! When they came back excited about what God had done through them, Jesus reminded them to be humble and grateful.

The disciples weren't perfect! Sometimes they argued about who was the greatest. Sometimes they didn't understand what Jesus was teaching. Peter even denied knowing Jesus three times! But Jesus was patient with them. He kept teaching them, correcting them, and loving them.

Jesus called these ordinary men to do extraordinary things! None of them were rich or famous or highly educated. But Jesus didn't need perfect people - He needed willing people! He needed people who would say yes to His call and follow Him!

After Jesus died and rose again and went back to heaven, these disciples (now called apostles) did amazing things! Peter preached to thousands of people! John wrote books of the Bible! They started churches all over the world! They were willing to suffer and even die for Jesus because they loved Him so much!

This story teaches us that Jesus still calls people to follow Him today - including YOU! You don't have to be perfect. You don't have to be super smart or talented. You just have to be willing to say, "Yes, Jesus, I will follow You!" When Jesus calls you, He promises to be with you, teach you, and use you to do great things for His Kingdom!

Remember this

“And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.”

Matthew 4:19 · KJV

What did we learn?

Just like those disciples left their nets and boats and jobs to follow Jesus, we need to be willing to put Jesus first in our lives - before our hobbies, our stuff, our plans. Following Jesus is the greatest adventure ever! He will make you into exactly who He wants you to be. So when Jesus says, "Follow Me," will you say yes?

Big idea: Jesus still calls people to follow Him today - including YOU!
