Gideon - God Uses the Weak

God chooses Gideon and a small army to defeat a massive enemy force.

After Joshua died, the Israelites kept disobeying God and worshiping idols. Because of this, God let their enemies defeat them. For seven years, the Midianites oppressed Israel! The Midianites would swoop in like locusts and destroy all the crops! The Israelites had to hide in mountain caves!

The story

The Israelites cried out to God for help. So God chose someone to save them - but the person He chose was hiding!

Gideon was threshing wheat in a winepress, trying to hide it from the Midianites. Suddenly, the angel of the LORD appeared and sat down under a tree nearby!

The angel said, "The LORD is with you, mighty warrior!"

Gideon looked around. Mighty warrior? ME? "Pardon me, sir," Gideon said, "but if the LORD is with us, why has all this happened to us? Where are all His wonders our ancestors told us about? But now the LORD has abandoned us!"

The LORD turned to him and said, "Go in the strength you have and save Israel! Am I not sending you?"

Gideon protested, "But how can I save Israel? My clan is the weakest in my tribe, and I am the least in my family!"

God answered, "I will be with you, and you will strike down all the Midianites as if they were but one man!"

Gideon asked for a sign. He prepared an offering of meat and bread. When the angel touched it with his staff, fire flared from the rock and consumed it! Then the angel disappeared! Gideon realized he had seen the angel of the LORD!

That night, God told Gideon to tear down his father's altar to Baal (a false god) and build an altar to the LORD. Gideon was afraid, so he did it at night with ten servants. In the morning, the town was angry! But Gideon's father defended him.

Then the Midianites and their allies came to attack Israel! Their armies were huge - like locusts! They had so many camels they couldn't be counted!

The Spirit of the LORD came upon Gideon! He blew a trumpet, calling men to follow him. 32,000 men came!

But Gideon was still unsure. He asked God for another sign: "If you will save Israel by my hand, I will place a wool fleece on the threshing floor. If there is dew only on the fleece and all the ground is dry, then I will know you will save Israel!" In the morning, the fleece was soaked - he squeezed out a bowl full of water! But the ground was dry!

Gideon asked for one more sign, the opposite way. The next morning, the fleece was dry but the ground was covered with dew! Now Gideon was sure!

But then God said something surprising: "You have too many men! I don't want Israel to say, 'We saved ourselves!' Tell anyone who is afraid to go home." 22,000 men left! Only 10,000 remained.

God said, "There are still too many! Take them down to the water, and I will test them for you." God told Gideon to separate the men who lapped water with their hands from those who knelt down to drink.

300 men lapped the water like a dog! God said, "With the three hundred men I will save you! Let all the others go home!"

Gideon must have been shocked! The enemy had thousands and thousands! But God wanted it to be clear that HE was the one giving the victory!

That night, God told Gideon to attack the camp. Gideon divided his 300 men into three groups. He gave each man a trumpet and a jar with a torch inside!

In the middle of the night, they surrounded the enemy camp. At Gideon's signal, they all blew their trumpets, smashed their jars, and held up their torches! They shouted, "A sword for the LORD and for Gideon!"

The Midianites woke up confused and terrified! In the darkness, they couldn't see that there were only 300 attackers! They thought they were surrounded by a huge army! The Midianites panicked and started fighting each other! Then they ran away!

God gave Gideon and his 300 men complete victory over the massive enemy army!

Remember this

“And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him, and said unto him, The LORD is with thee, thou mighty man of valour.”

What did we learn?

This story shows us that GOD doesn't need a big army or powerful weapons! He can win the battle with just a few people who trust Him! When we feel weak or inadequate, that's exactly when God can show His strength through us! It's not about how strong WE are - it's about how powerful GOD is!
