Feeding the 5000 - Jesus Provides

Jesus feeds thousands of people with just five loaves and two fish.

One day, huge crowds of people were following Jesus. They had seen Him heal sick people and do amazing miracles! They wanted to hear Him teach about God. So many people came - thousands and thousands of them!

The story

Jesus and His disciples got into a boat and sailed across the Sea of Galilee to a quiet place. But when they arrived, guess what? The crowds had followed them by walking around the lake! There were SO many people - over 5,000 men, plus women and children! Imagine a crowd bigger than your whole school, bigger than a baseball stadium!

Jesus felt sorry for all these people. They were like sheep without a shepherd. So even though He was tired, Jesus spent the whole day teaching them about God and healing people who were sick. The people listened to every word!

As the sun began to set, Jesus' disciples came to Him and said, "Master, it's getting late! These people need to eat! Send them away to the villages so they can buy food for themselves."

But Jesus said something surprising: "They don't need to go away. YOU give them something to eat!"

The disciples' eyes got big! "What?!" they said. "There are thousands of people here! It would take eight months' wages to buy enough bread for everyone to have just one bite!"

Jesus asked, "How much food do you have? Go and see."

Andrew, one of the disciples, looked around and found a young boy in the crowd. The boy had packed a small lunch - just five little barley loaves and two small fish. Andrew brought the boy to Jesus and said, "Here's a boy with five loaves and two fish, but what good is that for feeding so many people?"

Jesus smiled. He told His disciples, "Have the people sit down on the grass in groups." So everyone sat down - organized in groups of fifty and one hundred. It looked like a giant, colorful picnic!

Then Jesus took the boy's small lunch. He looked up to heaven and thanked God for the food. Then He broke the bread into pieces and started giving it to His disciples. "Pass this out to the people," He said.

Something AMAZING happened! The disciples kept breaking off pieces of bread and fish, but the food never ran out! They walked through the crowd, handing out food to everyone. Every person got bread. Every person got fish. And the food just kept coming!

The people ate and ate until they were full! Their tummies were happy and satisfied! Can you imagine - over 5,000 people eating their fill from one little boy's lunch?

When everyone had finished eating, Jesus told His disciples, "Gather up the leftover pieces so nothing is wasted." The disciples went around collecting the leftovers, and guess what? They filled TWELVE big baskets with leftover bread and fish! There was more food left over than they started with!

The people were amazed! They said, "This must be the Prophet who is coming into the world! This must be God's promised King!" They had never seen anything like it!

Remember this

“And they did all eat, and were filled: and they took up of the fragments that remained twelve baskets full.”

What did we learn?

That little boy probably came to see Jesus that day with just a simple lunch. But when he gave what he had to Jesus, Jesus used it to feed thousands of people! This story shows us that when we give what we have to Jesus - even if it seems small - He can do BIG, amazing things with it! Jesus can always provide more than enough!
