Peter Freed from Prison - An Angel's Rescue

An angel miraculously rescues Peter from prison.

King Herod was causing terrible trouble for the early church! He had arrested some believers and even had James, the brother of John, killed with a sword. When Herod saw how this pleased the Jewish leaders who opposed Jesus, he decided to do more! During the Passover celebration, Herod arrested Peter - one of Jesus's closest disciples and a leader in the church. This was very serious! Herod planned to put Peter on public trial after the Passover.

The story

Peter was thrown into prison and heavily guarded. Herod assigned sixteen soldiers to watch him - four squads of four soldiers each, taking turns! Peter was chained between two soldiers, and guards stood watch at the entrance. Herod wasn't taking any chances - he remembered that the apostles had escaped from prison before! This time, escape seemed absolutely impossible.

But while Peter was in prison, something powerful was happening outside those prison walls! The church was earnestly praying to God for him! Day and night, believers gathered together, calling out to God to help Peter. They knew that nothing was too hard for God!

The night before Herod planned to bring Peter to trial, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains. Can you believe it? The night before he might be executed, Peter was sound asleep! He had such peace and trust in God that he could sleep even in this dangerous situation! Guards stood at the entrance, watching carefully.

Suddenly, a bright light shone in the prison cell! An angel of the Lord appeared, and the light filled the dark cell! The angel struck Peter on the side to wake him up. "Quick, get up!" the angel said urgently. And amazingly, the chains fell off Peter's wrists! They just dropped away as if they had never been locked at all!

The angel told Peter, "Put on your clothes and sandals." Peter did so, but he was so confused he thought he must be seeing a vision! This couldn't be real, could it? Then the angel said, "Wrap your cloak around you and follow me." Peter followed the angel out of the cell, walking right past the sleeping soldiers!

They came to the first guard post - the soldiers didn't wake up! They walked past the second guard post - still nobody noticed! Finally, they came to the iron gate leading to the city. This gate would normally be locked tight! But as Peter and the angel approached, the gate opened all by itself! It just swung open as if invisible hands were pushing it!

Peter and the angel walked through the gate and went down one street together. Then suddenly, the angel left him! And that's when Peter finally realized this was real - not a dream or a vision! "Now I know for sure," Peter said to himself in amazement, "that the Lord has sent his angel and rescued me from Herod's clutches and from everything the Jewish people were hoping would happen!"

When Peter came to himself and realized where he was, he knew exactly where to go! He hurried to the house of Mary, the mother of John Mark. Many people had gathered there - they were praying! Even at that late hour, believers were together praying for Peter's safety!

Peter knocked at the outer entrance. A servant girl named Rhoda came to answer the door. When she recognized Peter's voice, she was so overjoyed that she forgot to open the door! Instead, she ran back inside, exclaiming, "Peter is at the door! Peter is here!" The praying believers looked at her in disbelief. "You're out of your mind!" they said. But Rhoda kept insisting it was true. They said, "It must be his angel." They couldn't believe God had already answered their prayers!

Meanwhile, Peter kept knocking at the door! Finally, someone opened it, and there stood Peter! Everyone was absolutely astonished! Peter motioned with his hand for them to be quiet - he didn't want to attract attention from neighbors who might report him to the authorities. Then Peter described how the Lord had brought him out of prison. "Tell James and the other brothers and sisters about this," he said. Then Peter left and went to another place to hide, because Herod would certainly be searching for him!

The next morning, there was quite a commotion at the prison! Where was Peter? How did he escape? The soldiers were in total confusion! Herod ordered a thorough search for Peter, but of course, they couldn't find him. Then Herod questioned the guards. What had happened? How could a prisoner escape when he was chained between two soldiers with guards at every post? The guards had no explanation! Because of their failure, Herod ordered that the guards be executed. Herod was angry because Peter had escaped, but he didn't understand that you can't stop God's plans!

This amazing story teaches us powerful truths! First, prayer is incredibly powerful! The church prayed earnestly for Peter, and God answered in a miraculous way! Sometimes we pray but don't really believe God will answer - just like the believers who were shocked when Peter actually showed up at their door! But God is able to do far more than we ask or imagine! Second, God can rescue us from impossible situations! Peter was heavily guarded, chained, and locked up - but none of that could stop God! When we face situations that seem hopeless, we can remember that nothing is impossible for God!

Third, we can have peace even in scary situations when we trust God! Peter was sleeping soundly the night before his trial! He wasn't pacing and worrying - he was resting in God's care! When we trust God, He gives us peace that doesn't make sense to the world. Fourth, God sometimes works in unexpected ways! He could have prevented Peter from being arrested in the first place, but instead, He let Peter be arrested and then sent an angel to rescue him! God's ways of working might surprise us, but His ways are always perfect!

Remember this

“The angel of the LORD encampeth round about them that fear him, and delivereth them.”

Psalms 34:7 · KJV

What did we learn?

Finally, we should always keep praying and never give up! The church didn't just pray once for Peter - they prayed earnestly and constantly! Even when things look bad, keep talking to God and trusting Him! He hears every prayer, and He will answer in the way that's best for us. Just like He sent an angel to rescue Peter, God is always watching over His children and protecting them according to His perfect plan!

Big idea: God is always with us and loves us very much!
