The Cross - Jesus Dies for Us

Jesus is crucified to pay the price for our sins.

This is the most important story ever told - a story about the greatest love the world has ever known. It's a sad story, but it's also full of hope and God's amazing plan to save us.

The story

After Jesus was arrested in the garden, the religious leaders took Him to the Roman governor, a man named Pilate. They wanted Pilate to punish Jesus, even though Jesus had done nothing wrong. He had only loved people, healed the sick, and taught about God!

Pilate asked Jesus many questions. He could tell that Jesus was innocent - that He hadn't done anything bad. Pilate even said to the crowd, "I find no fault in this man!" But the religious leaders stirred up the crowds. The people who had cheered for Jesus just days before were now shouting, "Crucify Him! Crucify Him!"

Pilate was afraid of the angry crowd. Even though he knew it was wrong, he gave the order for Jesus to be crucified on a cross. The Roman soldiers were rough and mean to Jesus. They made fun of Him and hurt Him. But Jesus didn't fight back. He didn't call down angels from heaven to rescue Him, even though He could have. He knew this was part of God's plan to save people from their sins.

The soldiers made Jesus carry a heavy wooden cross through the streets of Jerusalem. Jesus was so tired and weak that He fell down. A man named Simon from Cyrene helped carry the cross the rest of the way. They walked to a hill outside the city called Golgotha, which means "the place of the skull."

At Golgotha, the soldiers nailed Jesus to the cross. It was the saddest, darkest moment in history. But even in His pain, Jesus showed amazing love. He looked down at the soldiers who were hurting Him and prayed, "Father, forgive them, for they don't know what they're doing." Can you imagine that? Jesus was asking God to forgive the very people who were being so cruel to Him!

Two criminals were crucified on crosses beside Jesus - one on His right and one on His left. One of the criminals made fun of Jesus, but the other one believed in Him. He said, "Jesus, remember me when You come into Your kingdom." Jesus told him, "Today you will be with me in Paradise." Even while dying, Jesus was offering forgiveness and hope!

Jesus' mother Mary stood near the cross, crying. Jesus' disciple John was there with her. Jesus looked at His mother with love and told John to take care of her like his own mother. Even in His suffering, Jesus cared about others.

As Jesus hung on the cross, something strange and scary happened. The sky turned completely dark - even though it was the middle of the day! For three hours, darkness covered the land. All of creation seemed to know that something terrible and important was happening.

Jesus was taking the punishment for all the wrong things people have ever done - all the lies, all the mean words, all the disobedience - everything! He was doing this because He loved us so much. The Bible says, "God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life."

After three hours of darkness, Jesus cried out in a loud voice, "It is finished!" He had completed His mission! He had paid the price for our sins! Then He said, "Father, into Your hands I commit my spirit," and He died.

The moment Jesus died, amazing things happened! The thick curtain in the temple - the one that separated people from God's presence - ripped in two from top to bottom! This meant that because of Jesus, we could now come close to God! The earth shook and rocks split apart. Even the Roman soldier who was guarding Jesus said, "Truly this was the Son of God!"

Jesus' friends took His body down from the cross and buried it in a new tomb - a cave carved out of rock. They rolled a big stone in front of the entrance. Everyone was so sad. They thought it was the end.

But they didn't know that this wasn't the end of the story - it was just the beginning! God had an amazing plan! In three days, Jesus would rise from the dead! Death couldn't hold Him! The cross looked like the darkest defeat, but it was actually the greatest victory ever!

Remember this

“Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots.”

Luke 23:34 · KJV

What did we learn?

Jesus died on that cross because He loves you SO much! He took the punishment we deserved so we could be forgiven and live with God forever. When we believe in Jesus and accept what He did for us, our sins are washed away and we become part of God's family. That's the good news - the gospel! Jesus' death wasn't the end - it was the way to new life for everyone who believes in Him!

Big idea: God is always with us and loves us very much!
