Calming the Storm - Jesus Controls Nature
Jesus calms a dangerous storm with just His words.
It had been a long, busy day for Jesus and His disciples. Crowds of people had gathered around Jesus all day, wanting to hear Him teach and see Him heal the sick. Finally, as evening came, Jesus was very tired. He looked at His disciples and said, "Let's go across to the other side of the lake."
The story
The disciples were fishermen, so they knew the Sea of Galilee well. They left the crowds behind and got into their fishing boat. Jesus was so exhausted that He went to the back of the boat, laid His head on a cushion, and fell fast asleep. The gentle rocking of the boat and the soft sound of the waves must have been peaceful.
The disciples began rowing across the lake. The evening was calm, and the water was smooth. Everything seemed perfect! But the Sea of Galilee is known for sudden, dangerous storms. Mountains surround the lake, and sometimes wind rushes down through the valleys, whipping up huge waves without warning.
As the disciples rowed, the sky began to change. Dark clouds rolled in. The wind started to blow - softly at first, then stronger and stronger! Soon, powerful gusts of wind were pushing the boat around like a toy. The waves grew bigger and bigger!
"Hold on!" the disciples shouted to each other. Rain began to pour down. Lightning flashed across the dark sky, and thunder boomed! The waves crashed over the sides of the boat, filling it with water. The boat tossed up and down, up and down on the wild waves!
Even though some of the disciples were experienced fishermen who had been through storms before, they had never seen a storm this bad! The wind howled and the waves roared! Water was pouring into the boat faster than they could bail it out. They were in serious danger - the boat might sink at any moment!
The disciples worked frantically, trying to keep the boat from sinking. They were soaking wet, exhausted, and frightened. Where was Jesus during all this chaos? Amazingly, He was still sleeping in the back of the boat! The crashing waves, the howling wind, the rocking boat - none of it woke Him up! He was sleeping peacefully through the whole storm.
Finally, when the disciples thought they couldn't hold on any longer, they rushed to Jesus and shook Him awake. "Master! Master! Don't you care that we're going to drown?" they cried. You could hear the fear and desperation in their voices. They thought this was the end!
Jesus opened His eyes and stood up in the rocking boat. He wasn't panicked or afraid. He was completely calm and in control. Jesus looked out at the wild storm and did something amazing. He spoke to the wind and waves as if they were living things that could hear Him!
"Peace!" Jesus commanded the wind. "Be still!" He told the waves.
And do you know what happened? Instantly - in that very second - the wind stopped blowing! The waves became flat and calm! It was as if someone had flipped a switch. One moment there was a terrible, life-threatening storm. The next moment, everything was perfectly peaceful and still. The sea became as smooth as glass!
The disciples stood there in the boat, dripping wet, with their mouths hanging open in amazement. They looked at the calm water, then at each other, then at Jesus. What had they just witnessed? Even the wind and waves obeyed Jesus!
Jesus turned to His disciples and asked them an important question. "Why are you so afraid?" He said gently. "Where is your faith? Don't you trust me yet?"
The disciples felt a little embarrassed. They had seen Jesus heal sick people and do many miracles. They should have known He would take care of them! Even though the storm was scary, they had been safe all along because Jesus was with them in the boat.
But they were also filled with wonder and awe! They whispered to each other, "Who is this man? Even the wind and waves obey Him!" They had thought they knew Jesus, but now they realized He was even more powerful than they had imagined! Only God Himself has power over nature!
The rest of the boat ride was smooth and peaceful. When they reached the other side of the lake safely, the disciples would never forget what they had learned that night. Jesus is more powerful than any storm - whether it's a storm on a lake or a storm of trouble in our lives!
Remember this
“And they feared exceedingly, and said one to another, What manner of man is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?”
What did we learn?
This wonderful story teaches us something important. Sometimes in our lives, we face scary "storms" - maybe we're sick, or worried, or sad about something. During those hard times, it might feel like Jesus is "asleep" and doesn't see our problem. But Jesus is always with us, and He's always in control! He has power over every storm in our lives. We can call out to Him when we're afraid, and we can trust that He cares about us. He might calm the storm right away, or He might give us peace and strength to get through it. Either way, we're safe with Jesus in our boat! We never have to be afraid when Jesus is with us!
Big idea: God is always with us and loves us very much!
