Story 8 · Ages 7–12
Cain and Abel - The First Sin
Cain becomes jealous of his brother Abel and commits the first murder, showing the spread of sin.
Adam and Eve had two sons: Cain and Abel. Cain was a farmer who grew plants, and Abel was a shepherd who took care of sheep.
The story
One day, both brothers brought offerings to God. Abel brought the best lamb from his flock. Cain brought some vegetables he had grown. God was pleased with Abel's offering because Abel gave it with a loving heart. But God was not pleased with Cain's offering because Cain didn't give it from his heart.
Cain became very angry and jealous! His face turned red.
God asked Cain, "Why are you angry? If you do what is right, I will accept you too. But sin is waiting to trap you! You must rule over it!"
But Cain didn't listen. His jealousy grew and grew. One day, Cain said to Abel, "Let's go out to the field." When they were alone, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him! It was the first murder ever.
God asked Cain, "Where is your brother Abel?"
Cain lied, "I don't know. Am I supposed to take care of my brother?"
But God knew what Cain had done. God said, "What have you done? Your brother's blood cries out to me from the ground! Because of what you did, you will have to wander from place to place. The ground will not grow good crops for you anymore."
Cain cried out, "This punishment is too much! Everyone will want to hurt me!"
But even though Cain did something terrible, God still showed him mercy. God put a special mark on Cain so no one would hurt him.
Remember this
“If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him.”
What did we learn?
This sad story shows us how sin spreads and hurts people. Jealousy led to anger, and anger led to terrible actions. But it also shows that God is merciful, even when we do wrong. God wants us to control our anger and treat others with love!
Big idea: God is always with us and loves us very much!
