Jesus' Baptism - God's Beloved Son

John baptizes Jesus and God speaks from heaven.

In the wilderness near the Jordan River, there was a man named John the Baptist. He wore clothes made of camel's hair and ate locusts and wild honey. He looked wild and different, but he had an important message from God! John was calling people to get ready for the coming Messiah - God's promised King!

The story

Crowds of people came from Jerusalem and all over Judea to hear John preach. His voice was powerful and strong: "Repent! Turn away from your sins! The Kingdom of Heaven is near!" he shouted. "Make straight paths for the Lord!"

When people felt sorry for their sins, John baptized them in the Jordan River. Baptism was a sign that they wanted to wash away their old sinful ways and start fresh with God. John would take them into the water and dip them under, symbolizing that their sins were being washed away.

But John knew something important. He told the people, "I baptize you with water for repentance. But someone much greater than me is coming - someone so important that I'm not even worthy to carry His sandals! He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire!"

One day, someone special came walking down to the river. It was Jesus! He had traveled from Nazareth in Galilee to see John. When John saw Jesus coming toward him, he was amazed! John knew this was the Messiah - the promised Savior - the Lamb of God who would take away the sins of the world!

Jesus walked right into the water and asked John to baptize Him. But John didn't think this was right! He said, "Wait! I need to be baptized by YOU! Why are You coming to me?" John knew that Jesus was perfect and had never sinned. Jesus didn't need to repent or be washed from sin!

But Jesus gently insisted. He said, "Let it be so now. It is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness." Jesus wanted to be baptized not because He had sinned, but to show us the right way to follow God. He was setting an example for all of us! He was also identifying with sinful people - showing that He came to save us.

So John agreed. He baptized Jesus in the Jordan River, lowering Him under the water and lifting Him back up. It was a picture of dying to the old life and rising to new life - something Jesus would actually do on the cross and in the resurrection!

But what happened next was absolutely AMAZING! As soon as Jesus came up out of the water, the heavens opened! It was as if God pulled back the curtain of the sky! Everyone watching could see a spectacular sight!

The Spirit of God came down from heaven like a dove, gently descending and resting on Jesus. It was beautiful and peaceful, like a dove landing softly. This showed that Jesus was filled with the Holy Spirit and had God's power for the work He was about to do.

Then something even more incredible happened - God the Father spoke from heaven! His voice was like thunder, booming across the water and the wilderness: "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased!" Can you imagine hearing God's actual voice?

Everyone who was there heard it! God was announcing to the world: "This is Jesus, my Son! I love Him! I'm pleased with Him!" It was God putting His stamp of approval on Jesus and His mission. The Father was presenting His Son to the world!

This moment at the Jordan River was so special because all three persons of God were present at the same time - God the Father speaking from heaven, God the Son standing in the water, and God the Holy Spirit descending like a dove! This shows us that our God is three-in-one: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit!

After His baptism, Jesus was ready to begin His ministry. He would spend the next three years teaching, healing, performing miracles, and showing people God's love. His baptism marked the beginning of His public work to save the world!

Just like Jesus was baptized, Christians today are baptized too! When you believe in Jesus and are baptized, it's a way of saying, "I belong to Jesus! My old life is washed away, and I have new life in Him!" And just like God said He was pleased with Jesus, God is pleased with you when you trust in His Son! You become God's beloved child, and He loves you with all His heart!

Remember this

“And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”

Matthew 3:17 · KJV
