David Anointed - The Shepherd King

Samuel anoints young David to be the future king of Israel.

King Saul had been chosen by God to lead Israel, but he had made some very bad choices. He disobeyed God's commands and became proud and stubborn. God's heart was sad because Saul wouldn't listen anymore. So God decided to choose a new king - someone who would love Him and follow Him with all his heart.

The story

God spoke to His prophet Samuel and said, "How long will you mourn for Saul? I have rejected him as king over Israel. Fill your horn with oil and go! I am sending you to Jesse of Bethlehem. I have chosen one of his sons to be king." Samuel's eyes grew wide. God was going to choose a new king! But Samuel was worried. "How can I go?" he asked God. "If Saul hears about it, he will kill me!" God told Samuel to take a young cow with him and say he was going to Bethlehem to make a sacrifice to the Lord. Then, while he was there, he would secretly anoint the new king.

So Samuel traveled to the little town of Bethlehem, carrying his horn filled with special anointing oil. When the elders of the town saw the great prophet coming, they were nervous! "Do you come in peace?" they asked. "Yes, in peace," Samuel assured them with a gentle smile. "I have come to sacrifice to the Lord. Make yourselves holy and come to the sacrifice with me." Then Samuel made sure to invite Jesse and his sons.

When Jesse and his sons arrived, Samuel looked at them carefully. The oldest son, Eliab, was tall and handsome - he looked like a king! Samuel thought to himself, "Surely this is the one God has chosen!" Eliab stood tall and strong, and Samuel was about to pour the anointing oil on his head.

But God spoke to Samuel's heart and said, "No! Do not consider his appearance or how tall he is. I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart." Wow! God doesn't choose people the way we do! He doesn't care if someone is tall or short, pretty or plain, rich or poor. God looks inside to see what kind of heart a person has!

So Jesse called his second son, Abinadab, to walk in front of Samuel. Samuel looked at him carefully, waiting to hear from God. But God said, "No, not this one either." Then came Shammah, Jesse's third son. But again, God said, "No, I have not chosen this one."

One by one, Jesse had seven of his sons pass before Samuel. They were all fine young men - strong, capable, handsome. But each time, God said no. Samuel was confused. God had said He would choose one of Jesse's sons, but seven sons had passed by and none of them was the one! Samuel turned to Jesse and asked, "Are these all the sons you have?"

Jesse paused and then said, "Well, there is still the youngest. But he's out in the fields taking care of the sheep. We didn't think you'd want to see him - he's just a boy!" Samuel's face became serious. "Send for him at once," he commanded. "We will not sit down to eat until he arrives."

So a messenger ran out to the fields where the sheep were grazing. There, sitting on a hillside with a simple wooden staff in his hand, was young David. He was writing a song about how great God is, playing his small harp, and watching over the sheep. He loved being a shepherd! David knew each sheep by name, protected them from danger, and led them to green pastures and quiet streams. While other people might have thought being a shepherd was a lowly job, David saw it as important work that God had given him to do.

"David!" the messenger called, running up to him. "Come quickly! The prophet Samuel is at your house, and he wants to see you!" David's heart leaped with excitement. The great prophet Samuel wanted to see him? He quickly made sure the sheep were secure and ran toward home.

When David arrived, he was out of breath, his cheeks red from running. He probably had bits of straw in his hair and dirt on his clothes from working with the sheep. The Bible says he was "glowing with health and had a fine appearance and handsome features." But more than his appearance, David had a heart that loved God deeply.

As soon as Samuel saw David, the Lord said clearly to his heart, "Rise and anoint him; this is the one!" Samuel's face broke into a huge smile. This young shepherd boy - the one his own father had almost forgotten about - this was God's chosen king! It just shows that God often chooses the people we would least expect!

Samuel took his horn of oil and, in front of all David's brothers, he poured it on David's head. The oil ran down David's hair and face. This was a very special moment! Being anointed with oil meant that God had chosen David for a special purpose. From that day on, the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon David!

Can you imagine what David's brothers must have been thinking? They had probably teased David for being the youngest, for spending his days with smelly sheep. But now God had chosen him to be the next king! Sometimes God chooses the people we think are too young, too small, or too unimportant. But God sees things we don't see. He saw that David had a heart that loved Him more than anything else.

David didn't become king right away. In fact, he went right back to taking care of his sheep! But David knew that in God's perfect timing, he would become king. And you know what? David didn't let this special calling make him proud or lazy. He kept being faithful in the simple job God had given him right then - shepherding sheep. That's an important lesson! God wants us to be faithful in small things before He trusts us with bigger things.

Out in the fields, David spent his days praising God, writing songs (many of which became Psalms in our Bible!), and protecting his sheep. When a lion came to attack the flock, David fought it and rescued the sheep! When a bear came, David killed it with his bare hands! David was brave because he trusted that God was with him. All of these experiences were preparing David for the amazing adventures God had planned for his life!

David had no idea that one day he would fight a giant named Goliath, that he would become best friends with a prince, that he would face many dangers and challenges, and that he would eventually become the greatest king Israel ever had! God was training David's heart through all his experiences as a shepherd.

And here's something even more amazing - many, many years later, Jesus would be born into David's family line! Jesus is often called the "Son of David." The little shepherd boy who was anointed in Bethlehem became part of God's great plan to bring the Savior into the world!

David's story teaches us so many important lessons! First, God doesn't judge us by how we look on the outside - He looks at our hearts. Are we loving? Are we faithful? Do we trust God? Second, God can choose anyone to do great things for Him - even young people who others might overlook! You're never too young or too unimportant for God to use you! Third, we should be faithful in whatever God asks us to do right now, even if it seems small or unimportant. David was faithful as a shepherd, and God prepared him to be a king!

Remember this

“But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart. outward: Heb. eyes”

1 Samuel 16:7 · KJV

What did we learn?

What is God asking you to be faithful in today? Maybe it's being kind to your little brother or sister. Maybe it's doing your homework with a good attitude. Maybe it's helping your parents without complaining. Whatever it is, do it with all your heart, just like David took care of those sheep! Because God is preparing you for the special plans He has for your life too. Like David, you can have a heart that loves God more than anything else. And when you do, God will use you in amazing ways!

Big idea: God is always with us and loves us very much!
