Paul and Silas in Prison - Singing in Chains

Paul and Silas sing praises to God in prison and an earthquake sets them free.

Paul and Silas were on a missionary journey, traveling through different cities and telling people about Jesus! In the city of Philippi, they met a slave girl who had an evil spirit that enabled her to tell the future. Her owners made a lot of money from her fortune-telling. Day after day, this girl followed Paul and Silas around, shouting, "These men are servants of the Most High God, who are telling you the way to be saved!"

The story

Even though what she was saying was true, Paul knew the evil spirit was causing her to do this. Finally, Paul had enough! He turned around and said to the spirit, "In the name of Jesus Christ I command you to come out of her!" At that very moment, the spirit left her! The girl was free! But her owners were furious! They could no longer make money from her fortune-telling abilities!

The angry owners grabbed Paul and Silas and dragged them to the marketplace to face the authorities. They stirred up a crowd against them, shouting, "These men are Jews, and they're causing trouble in our city! They're teaching customs that are against Roman law!" The crowd joined in the attack against Paul and Silas. The magistrates ordered that Paul and Silas be stripped and beaten with rods!

The beating was brutal! Again and again, the rods struck their backs. Paul and Silas suffered terrible pain as they were beaten severely. After the beating, they were thrown into prison, and the jailer was commanded to guard them carefully. The jailer took no chances - he put Paul and Silas in the inner cell, the most secure part of the prison, and fastened their feet in stocks! The stocks held their legs in a painful position so they couldn't move.

Imagine how Paul and Silas felt! Their backs were bleeding from the beating. They were sitting in a dark, cold, dirty prison cell. Their feet were locked in uncomfortable stocks. They were in pain. They were tired. They were innocent, yet they were being treated like dangerous criminals! What would you do in that situation? Would you complain? Would you feel sorry for yourself? Would you be angry at God for letting this happen?

But Paul and Silas did something absolutely amazing! About midnight, when it was darkest and most uncomfortable, Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God! They were singing! In prison! With bleeding backs and feet in stocks! They were praising God! And the other prisoners were listening to them, probably amazed at their joy and faith!

Suddenly, while they were singing, there was a violent earthquake! The whole prison shook violently! The foundations of the prison were shaken! All the doors flew open! And everyone's chains came loose! Every single prisoner's chains fell off! The earthquake was so strong that it broke the locks and chains!

The jailer woke up from his sleep, startled by the earthquake! When he saw that all the prison doors were open, his heart filled with terror! He assumed all the prisoners had escaped! In Roman law, if a jailer let prisoners escape, he would be executed for his failure! The jailer was so filled with despair that he drew his sword, ready to kill himself rather than face a shameful execution!

But Paul shouted at the top of his voice, "Don't harm yourself! We are all here!" What mercy and kindness! Even though the jailer had put them in the worst part of the prison, even though they could have escaped, Paul stopped the jailer from killing himself! Paul and Silas hadn't run away! In fact, none of the prisoners had left! They had all stayed!

The jailer called for lights and rushed into the cell! He was trembling all over! He fell down before Paul and Silas, overwhelmed by what had happened! Then he brought them out of the prison and asked the most important question anyone can ask: "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?"

Paul and Silas answered with the most beautiful message: "Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved - you and your household!" Then right there, in the middle of the night, they spoke the word of the Lord to the jailer and to all the others in his house! They explained about Jesus - how He died for our sins and rose from the dead, and how we can have eternal life by believing in Him!

The jailer's heart was completely changed! At that very hour of the night, he washed the wounds of Paul and Silas - the wounds his prison had caused them! He showed them kindness and care! Then immediately, he and all his household were baptized! They became believers in Jesus! The jailer brought Paul and Silas into his house and set a meal before them. He was filled with joy because he had come to believe in God - he and his whole household!

What a night! It had started with Paul and Silas beaten, bleeding, and locked in prison. It ended with the jailer and his whole family coming to faith in Jesus, sharing a meal together as new brothers in Christ! God had turned everything around!

The next morning, the authorities sent word that Paul and Silas could be released. But Paul had a surprise for them! He said, "They beat us publicly without a trial, even though we are Roman citizens, and threw us into prison. And now do they want to get rid of us quietly? No! Let them come themselves and escort us out!" This was important - Roman citizens had legal rights that had been violated! When the magistrates heard that Paul and Silas were Roman citizens, they were alarmed! They came and apologized, then escorted them from the prison and requested that they leave the city.

This incredible story teaches us life-changing lessons! First, we can choose to praise God even in difficult circumstances! Paul and Silas could have complained and been miserable, but instead they chose to sing! Our attitude isn't determined by our circumstances - it's determined by our faith in God! Second, when we worship God even in hard times, it impacts others! The prisoners were listening to Paul and Silas sing. The jailer saw their joy and faith and wanted what they had! Your faithful response to difficulties might be exactly what someone else needs to see!

Third, God can use our difficult situations to bring others to salvation! If Paul and Silas hadn't been thrown in prison, the jailer and his family might never have heard about Jesus! God can work all things together for good! Fourth, even when God rescues us miraculously, we still need to be wise and use the rights and resources He's given us. Paul and Silas used their status as Roman citizens to ensure justice was done.

Remember this

“Rejoice in the Lord alway: and again I say, Rejoice.”

Philippians 4:4 · KJV
