Saul's Conversion - From Enemy to Apostle

Saul meets Jesus on the road to Damascus and becomes Paul.

In the early days after Jesus went back to heaven, there was a man named Saul. But Saul wasn't a follower of Jesus - he was one of Jesus' biggest ENEMIES! Saul hated the people who believed in Jesus. He thought they were wrong and dangerous. He wanted to stop them from talking about Jesus!

The story

Saul was a Pharisee - a religious leader who knew the Old Testament Scriptures really well. He was smart, educated, and very serious about following all of God's rules. But Saul didn't believe that Jesus was the Messiah. He thought the Christians were lying about Jesus rising from the dead. This made him very, very angry!

Saul did terrible things to Christians. He went from house to house in Jerusalem, dragging men and women out of their homes and throwing them into prison! Families were torn apart. Christians were so afraid of Saul! Some believers, like Stephen, were even killed because they believed in Jesus. And Saul approved of it all! He thought he was serving God by hurting Jesus' followers.

But Saul wasn't satisfied with persecuting Christians in just Jerusalem. He heard that followers of Jesus had escaped to other cities. So Saul went to the high priest and asked for special letters - official permission to go to the city of Damascus (about 150 miles away) to hunt down Christians there! He wanted to arrest them and bring them back to Jerusalem in chains.

The high priest gave Saul the letters he wanted. Saul gathered some men to go with him, and they set out on the long journey to Damascus. As they walked, Saul was probably planning all the ways he would find and arrest the Christians. He was breathing out threats and murder against the Lord's disciples. His heart was full of anger and hatred.

But God had very different plans for Saul! God knew that Saul's heart could change. God saw something in Saul that nobody else could see - that this enemy could become a powerful witness for Jesus!

As Saul and his companions got close to Damascus, suddenly - FLASH! - a brilliant light from heaven blazed around him! It was brighter than the sun! So bright that Saul couldn't see anything else! The light was so powerful and overwhelming that Saul fell to the ground!

Saul was terrified! His whole body was shaking! And then he heard a VOICE - a voice speaking from heaven! The voice said, "Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?"

Saul was confused and scared. Who was speaking to him? He managed to say, "Who are You, Lord?"

And then came the answer that would change Saul's life forever: "I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting!"

JESUS! The one Saul thought was dead! The one Saul said was a fake! Jesus was ALIVE and speaking from heaven! In that moment, Saul realized the terrible truth - he had been fighting against God's Son all along! Every time he hurt a Christian, he was actually hurting Jesus! Jesus said that persecuting His followers was the same as persecuting Him!

Can you imagine how Saul felt? His whole world was turned upside down! Everything he thought was true was wrong! The Christians were RIGHT - Jesus really was alive! He really had risen from the dead! He really was the Messiah!

Jesus continued speaking: "Now get up and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do."

Saul's companions were standing there in shock. They heard the sound of the voice, but they didn't see anyone! They didn't understand what was happening!

Saul got up from the ground, trembling. He opened his eyes, but - he couldn't see! The bright light had blinded him! This powerful man who had been so confident and fierce was now helpless and blind. His friends had to take his hand and lead him like a little child into Damascus.

For three days, Saul sat in darkness in a house on a street called Straight. He couldn't see anything. He didn't eat or drink. He just sat there, praying and thinking about what had happened. His whole life had changed in one moment! He had been so wrong! He had hurt so many people! What would happen to him now?

Meanwhile, in Damascus, there was a Christian man named Ananias. He loved Jesus and tried to live faithfully for Him. One day, the Lord spoke to Ananias in a vision: "Ananias!"

"Here I am, Lord," Ananias answered.

The Lord said, "Go to the house on Straight Street and ask for a man named Saul. He is praying, and he has seen a vision of you coming to place your hands on him so he can see again."

But Ananias was afraid! He said, "Lord, I have heard many reports about this man and all the harm he has done to your people in Jerusalem! And he has come here to arrest all of us who call on Your name!"

It made sense that Ananias was scared! Saul was dangerous! Why would God want Ananias to help him?

But the Lord said, "Go! This man is my chosen instrument to proclaim my name to the Gentiles and their kings and to the people of Israel. I will show him how much he must suffer for my name."

So Ananias obeyed, even though he was afraid. He went to the house and found Saul. Ananias placed his hands on Saul and said, "Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on the road, has sent me so that you may see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit."

Immediately, something like scales fell from Saul's eyes, and he could see again! Saul got up and was baptized. He ate some food and got his strength back. And then - amazingly - Saul began spending time with the Christians in Damascus, learning from them!

And here's the most shocking part: Saul went to the synagogues - the Jewish places of worship - and began preaching that Jesus is the Son of God! The very man who came to arrest Christians was now telling everyone about Jesus!

People were astonished! They said, "Isn't this the man who used to hunt down believers? Didn't he come here to arrest them?" But Saul kept growing more and more powerful in his preaching, proving that Jesus is the Messiah!

Later, Saul became known by his Roman name, Paul. He became one of the greatest missionaries who ever lived! He traveled all over the world telling people about Jesus. He started churches in many cities. He wrote many of the books in the New Testament! This man who once hated Jesus became one of Jesus' most devoted followers!

Paul never forgot what happened on the Damascus Road. Years later, he wrote, "I am the worst of sinners. But God had mercy on me so that Christ Jesus could use me as an example to show that He is patient with even the worst sinners."

Saul's story teaches us amazing truths! First, it shows that nobody is too far gone for God to save! If God could change Saul - the chief enemy of Christians - He can change anyone! Second, it shows us that Jesus is alive and powerful! Third, it reminds us that when we hurt other Christians, we hurt Jesus Himself, because we are all part of His body.

Remember this

“And he said, Who art thou, Lord? And the Lord said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest: it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks.”

Acts 9:5 · KJV

What did we learn?

Most importantly, Saul's conversion shows us God's incredible grace and mercy! Saul didn't deserve to be saved - he had done terrible things! But God loved him anyway and had a special plan for his life. The same is true for you! No matter what you've done wrong, God loves you and wants to change your heart. He can take your life and use it for His glory! Just like He did with Saul, God can turn your story into something beautiful!

Big idea: God is always with us and loves us very much!
