Water to Wine - The First Miracle
Jesus turns water into wine at a wedding, showing His divine power.
In the town of Cana in Galilee, there was going to be a wedding! Weddings in Jesus' time weren't just one-day events like today - they were huge celebrations that lasted for a whole week! There was music, dancing, feasting, and lots and lots of guests! Everyone in the town was invited to join the celebration!
The story
Jesus and His mother Mary were invited to this wedding. Jesus had just begun His ministry and had called His first disciples, so He brought them along too - Peter, Andrew, James, John, Philip, and Nathanael. Can you imagine having Jesus as a guest at your party?
The wedding feast was wonderful! People were eating delicious food, laughing, talking, and having a great time. In those days, serving wine to guests was very important - it was a sign of hospitality and celebration. The hosts had prepared lots of wine for all their guests to drink during the week-long party.
But then something embarrassing happened. Partway through the celebration, Mary noticed a big problem - the wine was running out! This was a disaster! Running out of wine at a wedding was a huge shame for the family hosting the party. It would be humiliating! People would talk about it for years. The bride and groom's families would be so embarrassed!
Mary knew that her son Jesus was no ordinary man. She had known since the angel appeared to her that Jesus was God's Son! She had treasured all the miraculous things that had happened - the angels, the shepherds, the wise men. She believed Jesus could help, even though He had never performed a public miracle before.
Mary went to Jesus and quietly said, "They have no more wine." She was asking Him to do something, though she didn't tell Him exactly what to do. She trusted Him to know what was right.
But Jesus answered, "Dear woman, why do you involve me? My hour has not yet come." Jesus meant that it wasn't quite time yet for Him to publicly show His power and glory. But Mary knew Jesus would help anyway. She turned to the servants and said, "Do whatever He tells you." What faith Mary had!
Nearby, there were six large stone water jars. These jars weren't for drinking - they were used for Jewish ceremonial washing. People would use this water to wash their hands and feet according to Jewish customs. Each jar was HUGE - they could hold 20 to 30 gallons of water! That's like having six bathtubs!
Jesus looked at the servants and gave them an unusual instruction: "Fill the jars with water." The servants must have been confused! How would water help when they needed wine? But they obeyed. They carried bucket after bucket of water until all six giant jars were filled to the very top. That's a LOT of water - maybe 120 to 180 gallons total!
Then Jesus said something even stranger: "Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet." The master of the banquet was like the wedding planner - the person in charge of making sure everything at the feast was perfect. The servants must have been nervous! What would the master think if they brought him water when they needed wine?
But the servants obeyed Jesus. They dipped a cup into one of the jars that had been filled with water and carried it to the master of the banquet. And here's where the miracle happened - somewhere between the jar and the master's cup, the water had turned into wine! Not just any wine, but the BEST wine anyone had ever tasted!
The master of the banquet took a sip. His eyes went wide with surprise and delight! He didn't know where this amazing wine had come from - but the servants who had filled the jars knew! The master called the bridegroom over and said, "Everyone brings out the best wine first, and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink. But you have saved the best wine until now!"
He was amazed! Usually, hosts served their best wine at the beginning of the party when everyone could appreciate it, and then served cheaper wine later. But this wine was better than anything served at the beginning! It was absolutely the finest wine ever! And there was SO much of it - over 100 gallons!
Jesus had just performed His very first miracle! He had changed ordinary water into extraordinary wine! Only God could do that! This miracle showed that Jesus had power over creation itself. He could change the very nature of things!
But why did Jesus choose this miracle as His first one? He could have healed someone or done something more dramatic. Here's the beautiful thing - Jesus cared about this family's problem! He didn't want them to be embarrassed. He showed that He cares about the details of our lives, even things that might seem small to others. He came to bring joy to a celebration!
The Bible tells us that this miracle revealed Jesus' glory, and His disciples believed in Him. This means that His disciples saw who Jesus really was - not just a good teacher, but God in human form! Their faith in Him grew stronger!
Only a few people knew about the miracle that day - Mary, the servants, and the disciples. The miracle was almost secret! But it was the beginning of Jesus' ministry of showing God's power and love through amazing signs and wonders.
This first miracle teaches us so many things! It shows us that Jesus has power over all of creation - He can do anything! It shows us that Jesus cares about our problems, big and small. It shows us that when we obey Jesus, even when His instructions seem strange, amazing things can happen! And it shows us that Jesus brings the best wine - He brings joy, celebration, and life that is better than anything we can imagine!
The servants at that wedding had to trust Jesus and obey, even when it didn't make sense. They filled jars with water when they needed wine! But their obedience led to a miracle. When we trust Jesus and do what He says, we get to see Him work in powerful ways!
Remember this
“This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth his glory; and his disciples believed on him.”
What did we learn?
Jesus is still in the miracle-working business today! He can take the ordinary things in your life - your talents, your time, your efforts - and turn them into something extraordinary for His Kingdom! Just like He turned water into wine, He can take what you give Him and make it more wonderful than you ever imagined! All you have to do is trust Him and obey!
Big idea: God is always with us and loves us very much!
