Healing the Paralyzed Man - Friends Who Care
Four friends lower a paralyzed man through a roof to reach Jesus.
In the town of Capernaum, there lived a man who couldn't walk. He had been paralyzed for a long time - his legs wouldn't move, and he had to lie on a mat all day, every day. He couldn't run, couldn't jump, couldn't even stand up! His friends had to carry him everywhere he went. It was a hard, lonely life.
The story
But this man had something very special - he had four wonderful friends who truly loved him! These friends had heard about Jesus, the amazing teacher who could heal sick people. They had heard stories of blind people seeing, deaf people hearing, and lame people walking! "We have to get our friend to Jesus!" they told each other. "Jesus can heal him!"
One day, news spread through town like wildfire: "Jesus is here! He's teaching at a house nearby!" The four friends looked at each other with excitement. This was their chance! They quickly picked up their paralyzed friend on his mat and carried him through the streets toward the house where Jesus was.
But when they arrived, their hearts sank. Oh no! There were SO many people! The house was completely packed - people filled every room, crowded the doorways, and spilled out into the street. Everyone wanted to see Jesus and hear Him teach! The friends tried to push through the crowd, but it was impossible. There was no way to get their friend inside.
Many people would have given up right then. They might have said, "Well, we tried. Let's go home." But not these friends! They loved their paralyzed friend too much to give up! They looked at each other, and one of them had a crazy, creative idea. "The roof!" he whispered. The others grinned. It was a wild plan, but it just might work!
You see, houses in that time and place had flat roofs made of dried mud and straw laid over wooden beams. People could climb up outside stairs and walk on the roof. So the four friends carried their paralyzed friend up the outside stairs to the roof of the house!
Inside, Jesus was teaching, and the people were listening carefully to every word. Suddenly, they heard strange noises from above - scraping, digging, thumping! Bits of dried mud and straw started falling from the ceiling! Everyone looked up. What in the world was happening?
The four friends were digging through the roof! They pulled away the mud and straw, moved the wooden beams, and made a big hole right above where Jesus was teaching! People inside the house gasped and moved out of the way as dust and debris fell down. Some religious leaders who were there frowned with disapproval. Who would dare interrupt Jesus like this?
But the friends didn't stop! They had come too far to turn back now. They tied ropes to the four corners of their friend's mat, and slowly, carefully, they began to lower him down through the hole in the roof! Down, down, down he came, right into the middle of the crowded room, right in front of Jesus!
Can you imagine the scene? There was the paralyzed man, lying on his mat in the middle of the room, with everyone staring at him! Above him, his four friends peered down through the hole in the roof, hoping and praying that Jesus would help.
Jesus looked at the man on the mat. Then He looked up at the faces of the four friends looking down from the roof. Jesus saw their faith - their absolute belief that He could help their friend. Jesus smiled. He loved seeing such faith! He loved seeing such loyal friendship!
Then Jesus said something that surprised everyone. He didn't say, "Stand up and walk." Instead, He looked at the paralyzed man with great kindness and said, "Son, your sins are forgiven."
Some religious teachers in the crowd were shocked and angry! "What?" they thought. "Only God can forgive sins! Who does this Jesus think He is?" They didn't say it out loud, but Jesus knew what they were thinking.
Jesus looked at them and said, "Why are you thinking these things in your hearts? Which is easier - to say 'Your sins are forgiven,' or to say 'Get up and walk'? But I'll prove to you that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins." Then Jesus turned to the paralyzed man.
"I tell you," Jesus said with authority, "get up! Take your mat and go home!"
Immediately - in that very instant - the man felt strength flowing into his legs! He could feel his muscles! His legs could move! Right there in front of everyone, the man who hadn't walked in years stood up! He was completely healed!
The crowd gasped! The man picked up his mat - the same mat he had been lying on just seconds before - and started walking! Then he began laughing and praising God! He walked right through the amazed crowd and out into the street!
Up on the roof, his four friends were jumping up and down, hugging each other, and shouting for joy! Their faith had been rewarded! Their friend could walk!
Everyone in the house was amazed! They had never seen anything like this! "We have seen incredible things today!" they said. They praised God, saying, "This is amazing! God has given such power to people!"
That night, the healed man probably walked home the long way, just because he could! He praised God with every step. And his four loyal friends walked beside him, rejoicing that they had never given up!
Remember this
“When Jesus saw their faith, he said unto the sick of the palsy, Son, thy sins be forgiven thee.”
What did we learn?
This beautiful story teaches us so many important lessons! First, it shows us the power of true friendship. Those four friends loved their paralyzed friend so much that they wouldn't give up, even when things looked impossible. They got creative and kept trying! Second, it shows us that Jesus cares about our whole person - not just our bodies, but also our souls. He forgave the man's sins AND healed his body. Third, it shows us that Jesus has power over everything - sickness, paralysis, and even sin! And finally, it teaches us about faith. When we bring our problems to Jesus and trust Him completely - just like those friends did - amazing things can happen! Jesus is still healing people today, and He still loves to see our faith. Who can you bring to Jesus? Who needs your help and your faith? Be like those four friends - never give up on the people you love!
Big idea: God is always with us and loves us very much!
