God Calls Samuel - A Young Prophet
God speaks to young Samuel in the temple at night.
Long ago in Israel, there was a temple where people came to worship God. Living in this temple was an old priest named Eli and a young boy named Samuel. Samuel's story was special from the very beginning! Before he was born, his mother Hannah had prayed and prayed for a baby. When God finally gave her Samuel, Hannah was so grateful that she promised to give him back to God to serve in the temple. So when Samuel was still very young, Hannah brought him to live with Eli and help in God's house.
The story
Samuel grew up in the temple, learning to love and serve God. Every day, he helped Eli with the lamps, the sacrifices, and keeping the temple clean. Samuel wore a special linen vest called an ephod, just like the priests wore. Every year, his mother Hannah would visit him and bring him a new robe that she had made with her own hands. Samuel could feel his mother's love in every stitch!
Now, in those days, something sad was happening in Israel. The Bible says that "the word of the Lord was rare" and "there were not many visions." This meant that God wasn't speaking to His people very often. Do you know why? It was because the people, including Eli's own sons who were priests, were not obeying God or honoring Him. Eli's sons were doing terrible things in the temple, and even though Eli told them to stop, he didn't make them stop. This made God very sad.
But God had a plan! He was going to raise up a new prophet - someone who would listen to Him and speak His words to the people. And that person was young Samuel!
One night, after all the work in the temple was done, Samuel went to bed in his usual spot near the Ark of the Covenant (the special golden box that represented God's presence). Eli had also gone to bed in his room. The lamp of God was still burning - it hadn't gone out yet. Everything was quiet and still in the temple.
Suddenly, Samuel heard a voice calling his name. "Samuel! Samuel!" The voice was clear and loud. Samuel sat up quickly. "Eli must need me!" he thought. So he jumped out of bed and ran to Eli's room. "Here I am!" Samuel said breathlessly. "You called me!"
But Eli looked confused. "I didn't call you, my son," he said sleepily. "Go back to bed." So Samuel went back to his bed, wondering what he had heard. Maybe he had been dreaming?
But then it happened again! "Samuel! Samuel!" the voice called. Once again, Samuel was sure it was Eli calling him. He got up and hurried to Eli's room. "Here I am!" he said. "You called me!" But again, Eli said, "I didn't call you, my son. Go back and lie down."
Now, here's something important - the Bible tells us that "Samuel did not yet know the Lord: The word of the Lord had not yet been revealed to him." This means that even though Samuel served in the temple and loved God, he had never heard God's voice speaking directly to him before! So he didn't recognize whose voice was calling him.
Samuel went back to bed, but he was very puzzled. Then, for the third time, the voice called out, "Samuel! Samuel!" And for the third time, Samuel got up and went to Eli. "Here I am," he said. "You called me!"
This time, Eli understood what was happening! His old eyes opened wide with wonder. "The Lord is calling the boy!" he realized. Even though Eli's own sons had rejected God, God was choosing to speak to young Samuel! Eli's heart must have been filled with mixed emotions - sadness that God wasn't speaking to him, but also joy that God was still working and choosing this faithful young boy.
Eli said to Samuel very gently, "Go and lie down. If He calls you again, say, 'Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.'" Can you imagine how Samuel must have felt? God - the Creator of the universe, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob - wanted to talk to him! His heart must have been beating so fast!
Samuel went back and lay down, waiting quietly in the darkness. Then the Lord came and stood there, calling as before, "Samuel! Samuel!" This time, Samuel knew what to do. With a humble and ready heart, he answered, "Speak, for your servant is listening."
And then God spoke to Samuel! God told him about what was going to happen to Eli's family because Eli's sons had sinned terribly and Eli hadn't stopped them. It was a serious message - God was going to punish Eli's family. Samuel listened to every word, even though the message was scary and sad.
Samuel lay there the rest of the night, but he couldn't sleep. His mind was full of what God had told him. When morning came, Samuel got up and opened the doors of the temple, just like he did every morning. But this morning was different! Samuel was afraid to tell Eli what God had said. It was such a hard message!
But Eli called Samuel to him. "Samuel, my son!" he said. "What did the Lord say to you? Please don't hide it from me. May God punish you if you hide anything from me that He told you!" Eli's voice was firm but kind. He really wanted to know, even if the news was bad.
So Samuel took a deep breath and told Eli everything. He didn't hide a single word, even though it was hard to say. When Eli heard the message, he bowed his head and said, "He is the Lord. Let Him do what is good in His eyes." Eli accepted God's word, even though it meant punishment for his family.
From that night on, everything changed for Samuel! The Bible says, "The Lord was with Samuel as he grew up, and He let none of Samuel's words fall to the ground." This means that everything Samuel said from God came true! Word spread throughout all of Israel - from the city of Dan in the far north to Beersheba in the far south - that Samuel was a true prophet of the Lord!
God continued to appear at Shiloh and reveal Himself to Samuel through His word. And Samuel spoke God's messages to all of Israel. As Samuel grew from a boy into a man, he became one of the greatest prophets Israel ever had! He would later anoint Israel's first king (Saul) and their greatest king (David). God used Samuel in mighty ways because Samuel had learned to listen when God spoke.
Samuel's story teaches us something wonderful: God can speak to anyone who is willing to listen - even a young child! You don't have to be old or important for God to use you. What matters is having a heart that says, "Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening!" Samuel was faithful in the small things - helping Eli, keeping the temple clean, doing his daily chores. And because he was faithful in the small things, God trusted him with bigger things!
Remember this
“And the LORD came, and stood, and called as at other times, Samuel, Samuel. Then Samuel answered, Speak; for thy servant heareth.”
What did we learn?
God still speaks to His children today! He speaks through the Bible, through the Holy Spirit in our hearts, and through other believers. The question is: Are we listening? Like Samuel, we need to be quiet sometimes, pay attention, and be ready to obey when God shows us what He wants us to do. When we learn to recognize God's voice and follow Him, He can use us to do amazing things for His kingdom, just like He used Samuel!
Big idea: God is always with us and loves us very much!
