Abraham's Call - God's Promise
God calls Abram to leave his home and promises to make him a great nation.
Long ago, there was a man named Abram (later God changed his name to Abraham). Abram lived in a city called Ur with his wife Sarai and his family.
The story
One day, God spoke to Abram: "Leave your country, your people, and your father's house. Go to a land that I will show you."
That's all God said! He didn't even tell Abram where he was going! Would you go somewhere if you didn't know where you were going?
But then God made amazing promises! "I will make you into a great nation. I will bless you and make your name great. You will be a blessing! All peoples on earth will be blessed through you!"
Abram was 75 years old, and he and Sarai had no children. But Abram chose to trust God! He packed up everything - his tents, his animals, his servants, and all his belongings. His nephew Lot came too. They said goodbye to their home and started walking!
They didn't have a map. They didn't have GPS! But they had God's promise, and that was enough for Abram.
They walked and walked, following God's leading. Finally, they arrived in a land called Canaan. God said, "This is the land! I will give this land to your offspring!"
Abram built an altar and worshiped God there. Even though he didn't see how God's promises would come true yet, he trusted God.
Sometimes Abram made mistakes and had doubts. But God was patient with him. God appeared to Abram again and again, reminding him of His promises.
Years later, God changed Abram's name to Abraham, which means "father of many nations." And God changed Sarai's name to Sarah. God promised that even though they were very old, they would have a son!
Abraham is called "the father of faith" because he believed God even when it seemed impossible. He left everything familiar because he trusted God's promises.
Remember this
“Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father’s house, unto a land that I will shew thee:”
What did we learn?
God keeps His promises! Through Abraham, God blessed the whole world - because Jesus, the Savior of the world, came from Abraham's family! When we trust God and obey Him, even when we don't understand everything, God will bless us too!
Big idea: God is always with us and loves us very much!
