Loved First: Finding Security in God's Protection

Have you ever noticed how differently you feel when someone genuinely likes you first? Maybe it was a new coworker who went out of their way to include you, or a neighbor who brought cookies before you even introduced yourself. There's something profoundly settling about being loved before you've earned it—or even asked for it. It changes the entire dynamic of the relationship and gives you a security you can't manufacture on your own.

The Foundation of All Love

When John writes "We love him, because he first loved us," he's revealing something revolutionary about how love actually works. This isn't just a nice spiritual sentiment—it's the bedrock truth about every meaningful relationship we'll ever have with God. The Greek word for "first" here doesn't just mean "before" in time; it means "as the source" or "as the origin." God's love isn't a response to ours. Our love is a response to His.

This completely flips our natural way of thinking. We're used to earning affection, proving our worth, and wondering if we're enough. But John is saying that God's love for you existed before you even knew you needed it. Before your first prayer, your first good deed, your first moment of faith—God was already head-over-heels about you.

This truth becomes especially powerful when we think about protection. In our prayer today, we asked God to be our refuge and fortress, to hide us under the shadow of His wings. But here's what's beautiful: God isn't protecting us because we've convinced Him we're worth it. He's protecting us because His love came first, and that love naturally flows into care, provision, and security.

Living from Love, Not for Love

So what does this look like in your Monday morning? It means you don't have to spend your emotional energy trying to earn God's protection or prove you deserve His care. When anxiety hits about your job security, your health, or your relationships, you can remember that God's commitment to you isn't based on your performance—it's based on His character.

This doesn't mean life becomes easy or that bad things won't happen. But it does mean you're operating from a place of being already loved rather than trying to become lovable. When you face criticism at work, you can handle it better because your core identity isn't on trial. When relationships get messy, you can love more freely because you're not desperately trying to earn love in return. When you mess up (and you will), you can approach God honestly because you know His love for you isn't news to Him—it's ancient history.

Rest in First Love

Today, as you navigate whatever challenges come your way, remember this: you are not trying to get God to love you. You are learning to live in the reality that He already does. His protection over your life isn't something you need to qualify for—it flows from a love that was there before you were even born. That's not just good theology; that's the kind of security that can carry you through anything.

You don't have to be afraid that God will withdraw His love if you don't measure up today. His love came first, and it's not going anywhere.

To reflect on

  1. In what areas of your life do you still feel like you need to earn God's love or protection?
  2. How might your relationships change if you truly believed you were already completely loved?
  3. What fears or anxieties feel lighter when you remember that God's love for you came first?
  4. How can you extend this same 'love first' approach to someone in your life today?

One step today

Write down one worry you're carrying today, then beneath it write: 'God loved me before this problem existed, and His love isn't dependent on how this turns out.'

A prayer

O Lord our God, Thou art my refuge and my fortress, my God in whom I trust. How excellent is Thy name in all the earth! Thy mercy endureth forever, and Thy faithfulness reacheth unto the clouds. I will bless the Lord at all times; His praise shall continually be in my mouth. For Thou, Lord, art most high above all the earth, and greatly to be praised in the city of our God. As we go forth this day, hide us under the shadow of Thy wings, for in Thee do we put our trust. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Make us to lie down in green pastures, and lead us beside the still waters. Restore our souls and lead us in the paths of righteousness for Thy name's sake. Strengthen us with might by Thy Spirit in the inner man, that we may be able to comprehend the breadth and length and depth and height of Thy love. Create in us clean hearts, O God, and renew a right spirit within us. Let the words of our mouths and the meditation of our hearts be acceptable in Thy sight, O Lord, our strength and our redeemer. We lift up our eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh our help; our help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow us all the days of our lives, and we will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. In the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.
