God's Got Your Back: Finding Courage in Joshua 1:9

“Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.”

Joshua 1:9 · KJV

God's Got Your Back: Finding Courage in Joshua 1:9

I was scrolling through news headlines this morning, and honestly, it felt overwhelming. Economic uncertainty, global conflicts, health scares, family struggles – sometimes it feels like we're living in a world designed to make us anxious. Maybe you've felt it too – that knot in your stomach when you think about your teenager driving alone for the first time, or the sleepless nights worrying about job security. In moments like these, we desperately need to hear God's voice cutting through the noise of our fears.

The Promise That Changes Everything

When God spoke these words to Joshua, the young leader was facing an impossible task. Moses had died, and now Joshua had to lead millions of people into an unknown land filled with enemies and obstacles. Talk about pressure! But notice what God doesn't say. He doesn't promise Joshua that the journey will be easy or that there won't be any battles ahead. Instead, God gives him something far better – the assurance of His constant presence.

The Hebrew word for "courage" here is amats, which means to be alert, physically strong, and determined. It's not about feeling fearless – it's about choosing to move forward despite our fears because we know we're not alone. God isn't asking us to manufacture bravery from thin air. He's reminding us that true courage comes from remembering who walks beside us.

Real Protection for Real Life

So what does God's protection actually look like in our Monday morning meetings or our midnight worries about our kids? It doesn't always mean we'll avoid every difficulty or disappointment. Sometimes God's protection means giving us supernatural peace in the storm rather than removing the storm entirely. I think of Sarah, a single mom in our congregation, who lost her job last year. God didn't magically make her bills disappear, but He provided through unexpected sources – a neighbor who brought groceries, a friend who helped with childcare, a new opportunity that opened just when she needed it most.

God's protection often comes through community, through His Word speaking to our hearts at just the right moment, through doors that open and others that mercifully close. It's in the way He strengthens our inner resolve when we're tempted to give up, and how He brings the right people into our lives at exactly the right time. His presence doesn't eliminate every challenge, but it transforms how we face them.

You're Not Walking Alone

Here's the beautiful truth I want you to carry with you today: wherever you're going, whatever you're facing, God is already there waiting for you. That difficult conversation you've been avoiding? He's there. The medical test results you're waiting for? He's there. The uncertain future that keeps you awake at night? He's already there, preparing the way.

You don't have to be strong enough for everything life throws at you – you just need to be connected to the One who is. When fear whispers "you can't handle this," let God's promise whisper back: "You don't have to handle it alone." His presence is your protection, His faithfulness is your fortress, and His love is the courage you need for whatever comes next.

To reflect on

  1. What specific fear or challenge am I facing right now that needs God's courage?
  2. How have I experienced God's protection in past difficult situations?
  3. Where do I tend to try to be strong on my own instead of relying on God's presence?
  4. What would change in my daily life if I truly believed God is with me wherever I go?

One step today

Choose one specific worry or fear you're carrying today and write it down, then write Joshua 1:9 next to it as a reminder that God is with you in that very situation.

A prayer

O Lord our God, how excellent is thy name in all the earth! Thou art our refuge and our fortress, our God in whom we trust. We lift up our eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh our help. Our help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth. This is the day which the Lord hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it. Let the words of our mouth and the meditation of our heart be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, our strength and our redeemer. Hallowed be thy name, O Father which art in heaven. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done in our lives as it is in heaven. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for we walk through the valley of the shadow of death, yet we fear no evil, for thou art with us. Surely he shall give his angels charge over us, to keep us in all our ways. The Lord shall preserve our going out and our coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore. Strengthen us with might by thy Spirit in the inner man, that Christ may dwell in our hearts by faith. Create in us a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within us. Search us, O God, and know our hearts; try us and know our thoughts. If there be any wicked way in us, lead us in the way everlasting. We confess our sins before thee, knowing that thou art faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Remember our families and loved ones, O Lord; be thou their shield and exceeding great reward. We give thee thanks, O Lord, with our whole heart; we will show forth all thy marvelous works. Bless the Lord, O our souls, and all that is within us, bless his holy name. The Lord is our shepherd; we shall not want. Into thy hands we commit our spirit, for thou hast redeemed us, O Lord God of truth. Let thy mercy, O Lord, be upon us, according as we hope in thee. Thine, O Lord, is the greatness, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.
