Finding Safety When Life Gets Scary - Nahum 1:7

“The LORD is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble; and he knoweth them that trust in him.”

Nahum 1:7 · KJV

Finding Safety When Life Gets Scary

Last week, my neighbor's teenage daughter was in a car accident. As I watched this mom pace the hospital hallway, wringing her hands and checking her phone every few seconds, I was reminded of how quickly life can shift from ordinary to overwhelming. Whether it's a medical crisis, job loss, relationship breakdown, or global uncertainty, we all face moments when we desperately need somewhere safe to turn. Where do you go when the bottom drops out?

God: Our Reliable Refuge

The prophet Nahum wrote these words during a time of national crisis. The Assyrian empire was terrorizing smaller nations, including Israel, and people were living in constant fear of invasion and destruction. Into this atmosphere of dread, Nahum declares a powerful truth: "The LORD is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble; and he knoweth them that trust in him."

Think of God as the most secure fortress you can imagine – but better. Ancient strongholds were built on high ground with thick walls, stocked with supplies, and designed to protect people during attacks. That's the picture Nahum paints of God's protection. But here's what makes this even more beautiful: this fortress isn't just strong, it's also good. God doesn't protect us grudgingly or with conditions attached. His very nature is goodness, and His protection flows from His love.

Notice that last phrase: "he knoweth them that trust in him." This isn't about God having a generic awareness of humanity. The Hebrew word here suggests intimate, personal knowledge – like how you know your closest friend's voice in a crowd. God knows your specific fears, your particular struggles, and exactly what kind of help you need.

Real Protection for Real Problems

But let's be honest – sometimes it doesn't feel like God is protecting us, does it? Bad things still happen to good people. Christians get sick, lose jobs, and face the same struggles as everyone else. So what does God's protection actually look like in our Monday-through-Friday reality?

God's protection isn't always about preventing difficult circumstances – sometimes it's about providing strength and peace within them. It might look like finding unexpected courage during a difficult conversation with your boss. It could be the friend who calls right when you're feeling most alone, or the surprising sense of calm that settles over you in the middle of chaos. God's protection often works through community, through inner resilience He builds in us, and through opportunities and resources that appear just when we need them most.

You're Not Forgotten

If you're in a tough season right now, please know that God sees you. He hasn't forgotten your address or lost track of your situation. You matter to Him – not because of what you do or don't do, but simply because you're His. Even when you can't see how things will work out, even when you're not sure you have enough faith, God's goodness toward you remains constant. His protection might not look exactly like what you expected, but His love for you is unwavering. You can trust Him with your fears, your family, and your future.

Today's prayer acknowledges God as our source of protection and strength, reminding us that His faithfulness is new every morning and His mercy follows us all our days.

To reflect on

  1. What situations in your life right now make you feel most in need of God's protection?
  2. How have you experienced God's protection in the past, even if it didn't look like what you expected?
  3. What fears do you need to bring to God as your 'stronghold' today?
  4. How might God be inviting you to trust Him more deeply in your current circumstances?

One step today

Write down one specific worry or fear you're carrying, then pray Nahum 1:7 over that situation, asking God to be your stronghold in this particular trouble.

A prayer

O Lord our God, thou art very great; thou art clothed with honour and majesty. Blessed be thy name from the rising of the sun unto the going down of the same. We lift up our eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh our help. Our help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth. Great is thy faithfulness, O God our Father; thy mercies are new every morning. He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. We will say of the Lord, He is our refuge and our fortress: our God; in him will we trust. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Make thy face to shine upon us, and be gracious unto us. Order our steps in thy word: and let not any iniquity have dominion over us. Strengthen us with might by thy Spirit in the inner man, that Christ may dwell in our hearts by faith. We give thanks unto thee, O God, we give thanks: for that thy name is near thy wondrous works declare. The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow us all the days of our lives: and we will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever. Into thy hands we commit our spirit, for thou hast redeemed us, O Lord God of truth. Let the words of our mouth, and the meditation of our heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, our strength, and our redeemer. Amen.
