Mustard Seed Faith: Moving Mountains in Daily Life - Matthew 17:20

“If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.”

Matthew 17:20 · KJV

Small Faith, Big God

Have you ever stared at a problem so big it felt like trying to move a mountain with a teaspoon? Maybe it's a relationship that seems beyond repair, a financial crisis that keeps you awake at night, or a health diagnosis that has turned your world upside down. We've all been there—feeling small and powerless in the face of overwhelming circumstances. It's in these moments that Jesus' words about mustard seed faith can either sound like empty promises or life-changing truth.

The Power of Tiny Beginnings

When Jesus spoke these words to His disciples, He had just come down from the Mount of Transfiguration to find them struggling to help a desperate father whose son was tormented by seizures. The disciples had tried and failed, and Jesus used this teachable moment to reveal something profound about faith. The mustard seed He referenced was the smallest seed known to His audience, yet it grew into a large shrub. Jesus wasn't saying we need perfect faith or mountain-sized faith—He was saying that even the tiniest genuine faith, when placed in an infinitely powerful God, can accomplish the impossible.

The beautiful truth is that faith isn't about the strength of our believing; it's about the faithfulness of the One we believe in. We often get this backwards, thinking we need to muster up more faith, pray harder, or somehow convince God of our worthiness. But mustard seed faith is simply trusting that God is who He says He is, even when we can't see how He'll work things out. It's saying, "I don't understand how this will happen, but I trust You with it anyway."

Moving Mountains in Real Life

Now, let's be honest—most of us aren't literally moving geographical mountains. But we all have mountains that need moving. For Sarah, a single mom in our congregation, her mountain was finding stable housing after losing her job during the pandemic. She didn't have perfect faith, but she had mustard seed faith—enough to keep praying, keep looking, and keep trusting God one day at a time. Today, she has a beautiful home and a job she loves. For Mark, it was overcoming an addiction that had controlled him for years. His mountain moved not in one dramatic moment, but through countless small steps of faith—choosing recovery meetings over the bar, calling his sponsor instead of his dealer, trusting God with one day at a time.

The mountains in our lives aren't moved by our ability to believe perfectly, but by our willingness to trust imperfectly. Maybe your mountain is fear about your children's future, a marriage that feels hopeless, or a dream that seems impossible. Mustard seed faith says, "God, I don't know how You'll handle this, but I'm going to trust You with it anyway." It's not about having all the answers; it's about knowing the One who does.

Protected by His Faithfulness

As we place our mustard seed faith in our mountain-moving God, we find ourselves surrounded by His protection. Not protection from every difficulty, but protection in the midst of them. When we trust Him with our impossible situations, we discover that He is our refuge and fortress, just as our prayer reminds us today. His protection isn't always a shield that keeps problems away—sometimes it's the strength to face them and the peace to endure them.

Remember, friend, you don't need perfect faith to see God work. You just need to plant your tiny seed of trust in the soil of His faithfulness and watch Him do what only He can do. Your mountain may not move overnight, but with mustard seed faith, it will move.

To reflect on

  1. What 'mountain' in your life feels impossible to move right now?
  2. How can you practice mustard seed faith in your current circumstances, even if your faith feels small?
  3. Can you think of a time when God moved a mountain in your life through small steps rather than one big miracle?
  4. What's the difference between trying to muster up more faith versus trusting God's faithfulness?

One step today

Identify one specific 'mountain' you're facing today and write a simple prayer placing it in God's hands, acknowledging that even your small faith is enough for Him to work with.

A prayer

O Lord our God, thou art our refuge and our fortress, our God in whom we trust. We come before thy throne of grace with thanksgiving and praise, for thou art good and thy mercy endureth forever. Blessed be thy holy name, for thou hast been our dwelling place in all generations. From the rising of the sun unto the going down of the same, thy name is to be praised. Almighty Father, we seek thy face this day and ask that thou wouldest be our shield and our exceeding great reward. Cover us with thy feathers, and under thy wings let us trust. Deliver us from the snare of the fowler and from the noisome pestilence. Let no evil befall us, neither shall any plague come nigh our dwelling, for thou shalt give thy angels charge over us, to keep us in all our ways. Order our steps in thy word, and let not any iniquity have dominion over us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. We lift up our eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh our help. Our help cometh from thee, O Lord, which made heaven and earth. Strengthen us with might by thy Spirit in the inner man, that Christ may dwell in our hearts by faith. Grant unto us, according to the riches of thy glory, to be rooted and grounded in love. We commit our way unto thee and trust also in thee, knowing that thou wilt bring it to pass. In Jesus' precious name we pray, Amen.
