When You Can't See the Way Forward - Hebrews 11:1
“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”
When You Can't See the Way Forward
You're staring at your laptop screen, job applications scattered across multiple browser tabs. The company downsizing caught everyone off guard, and now you're wondering how you'll make next month's mortgage payment. Your spouse tries to be encouraging, but you can see the worry in their eyes too. "Just have faith," well-meaning friends say, but what does that actually mean when your bank account is dwindling and the future feels like a thick fog?
The writer of Hebrews understood this tension. When he penned these words about faith being "the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen," he wasn't writing to people lounging in comfortable circumstances. He was addressing believers facing persecution, uncertainty, and real hardship. They needed something more substantial than wishful thinking—they needed a faith that could sustain them through the unknown.
Faith, as described here, isn't positive thinking or crossing your fingers and hoping for the best. The word "substance" literally means "foundation" or "confidence." It's what you stand on when the ground beneath your feet feels shaky. Faith becomes the solid platform from which you can face tomorrow, even when tomorrow looks nothing like what you planned. It's not about pretending everything is fine—it's about trusting that God's protection and provision are real, even when you can't trace their outlines yet.
Think about it this way: when you flip a light switch, you don't see the electricity flowing through the wires, but you have evidence of its power when the room floods with light. Faith works similarly. We may not see God's hand moving in our circumstances, but we can trust in the evidence of His character, His past faithfulness, and His promises.
This doesn't make the waiting easier, and it certainly doesn't eliminate the practical steps we need to take. Faith isn't passive—it's active trust combined with wise action. You still send out those resumes, have those difficult conversations, and make those hard decisions. But you do so from a place of confidence that God's protective care isn't dependent on your ability to control outcomes. When you pray for protection, as we did earlier, you're not just asking for physical safety—you're seeking refuge for your heart and mind in the midst of uncertainty.
The beautiful thing about faith is that it grows stronger not in the easy seasons, but in the seasons when you have to exercise it daily. Every morning you choose to trust rather than panic, every time you take the next right step without seeing the whole staircase, you're building that foundation of faith. You're proving to yourself that God's faithfulness isn't just a nice idea—it's the bedrock reality on which you can build your life.
Remember, you're not walking this path alone. The same God who has carried you through past uncertainties is with you now. His protection isn't limited by your circumstances or your ability to figure everything out. Sometimes the most profound act of faith is simply getting up tomorrow and taking the next step, trusting that the One who holds your future is both loving and capable. That's not naive optimism—that's faith with substance.
To reflect on
- What specific area of your life requires you to have faith in 'things not seen' right now?
- How have you experienced God's faithfulness in past uncertain seasons?
- What's the difference between worry and taking practical action steps while trusting God?
- How can you actively build your 'faith foundation' during this current season?
One step today
Identify one practical step you need to take today regarding your current uncertainty, and take that step while consciously choosing to trust God with the outcome.
A prayer
O Lord, Thou art my God; early will I seek Thee, for Thy lovingkindness is better than life. I will bless the Lord at all times; His praise shall continually be in my mouth. Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised; His greatness is unsearchable. From the rising of the sun unto the going down of the same, the Lord's name is to be praised. Be Thou my strong habitation, whereunto I may continually resort. He that dwelleth in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in Him will I trust. Cover us with Thy feathers, and under Thy wings shall we trust. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Make us to go in the path of Thy commandments; for therein do we delight. Search us, O God, and know our hearts: try us, and know our thoughts: and see if there be any wicked way in us, and lead us in the way everlasting. Create in us clean hearts, O God; and renew a right spirit within us. Strengthen us with might by Thy Spirit in the inner man, that Christ may dwell in our hearts by faith. Let us be rooted and grounded in love, that we might be filled with all the fullness of God. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow us all the days of our lives: and we will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. The Lord bless us, and keep us. The Lord make His face shine upon us, and be gracious unto us. The Lord lift up His countenance upon us, and give us peace. In the name of Jesus, our Lord and Saviour, Amen.
