Fresh Mercies: God's Daily Protection - Lamentations 3:22-23
“It is of the LORD's mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.”
Fresh Mercies Every Morning
Have you ever had one of those mornings where you wake up and immediately feel the weight of yesterday's failures pressing down on you? Maybe it's the harsh words you spoke to your spouse, the mistake you made at work, or simply the overwhelming sense that you're not measuring up. I had a morning like that recently, staring at the ceiling at 5 AM, mentally rehearsing all the ways I'd fallen short. But then I remembered something beautiful about how God works.
The Beautiful Promise of New Beginnings
When Jeremiah wrote these words in Lamentations, he wasn't sitting in a comfortable chair with a cup of coffee. He was watching his beloved city of Jerusalem lie in ruins, witnessing unimaginable suffering and loss. Yet in the middle of this devastating book—literally at its center—he declares something remarkable: God's mercies are new every morning, and His compassions never fail.
The word "mercies" here means so much more than just forgiveness. It encompasses God's loving-kindness, His tender care, His protective watch over us. Think of it like this: every single morning, God opens His hands and pours out fresh grace, renewed protection, and limitless compassion. It's not recycled mercy from yesterday—it's brand new, custom-made for whatever you'll face today.
Jeremiah understood something profound about God's character. Even when circumstances screamed otherwise, even when it felt like God was distant or absent, the prophet anchored his hope in God's unwavering faithfulness. "Great is thy faithfulness" isn't just a beautiful hymn lyric—it's a declaration of war against despair.
Finding Protection in Daily Life
So what does this look like when you're dealing with a difficult boss, struggling in your marriage, or watching your teenager make poor choices? God's daily mercies show up as His protective presence in these very real situations. His protection isn't always a shield that prevents hard things from happening—sometimes it's the strength to endure, the wisdom to respond well, or the peace that surpasses understanding in the middle of chaos.
I think about Sarah, a friend who's been caring for her aging mother with dementia. Some days feel impossible, but she's learned to start each morning asking God for that day's portion of patience, strength, and love. She's discovered that God's mercies really are sufficient for each day, but she has to collect them fresh each morning—like the Israelites gathering manna in the wilderness.
Take Heart: You're Not Forgotten
Here's what I want you to know today: you're not forgotten, you're not abandoned, and you haven't exhausted God's supply of grace. Whatever you're facing—whether it's fear about the future, regret about the past, or overwhelming challenges in the present—God's mercies are waiting for you this morning. His faithfulness isn't dependent on your performance or your feelings. It's as reliable as the sunrise, and just as certain to come again tomorrow.
The same God who protected His people through exile and brought them home is watching over your life today. His mercies are new this morning, perfectly suited for whatever lies ahead.
To reflect on
- What specific area of your life feels most in need of God's fresh mercy today?
- How have you experienced God's protective care in past difficult seasons?
- What would it look like to practically 'collect' God's daily mercies each morning?
- When you feel overwhelmed, how can you remind yourself of God's faithful character?
One step today
Set a phone reminder for tomorrow morning to spend 2 minutes asking God for that day's portion of mercy, strength, and protection before checking any messages or news.
A prayer
O Lord our God, thou art very great; thou art clothed with honour and majesty. We lift up our eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh our help. Our help cometh from thee, O Lord, which made heaven and earth. Blessed be thy name from the rising of the sun unto the going down of the same. For thy mercy endureth forever, and thy faithfulness unto all generations. He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. We say of thee, O Lord, thou art our refuge and our fortress: our God; in thee will we trust. Cover us with thy feathers, and under thy wings shall we trust: thy truth shall be our shield and buckler. Lead us in the way everlasting, and make thy face to shine upon us. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. Create in us clean hearts, O God; and renew a right spirit within us. Stretch forth thy hand from above; rid us and deliver us from the hand of strange children. The Lord shall preserve our going out and our coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore. We commit our works unto thee, and our thoughts shall be established. Bless the Lord, O our souls: and all that is within us, bless thy holy name. In thy name we pray, for thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
