Finding Strength in the Waiting: Isaiah 40:31 Devotional

“But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.”

Isaiah 40:31 · KJV

Finding Strength in the Waiting: Isaiah 40:31 Devotional

Have you ever felt like you're running on empty? Maybe it's the third cup of coffee before 10 AM, or that moment when you realize you've been scrolling your phone for twenty minutes instead of tackling your to-do list. We live in a world that glorifies the hustle, celebrates the grind, and tells us that rest is for the weak. But what if I told you that God has a completely different approach to strength and endurance?

The Promise of Renewed Strength

When Isaiah penned these words, the people of Israel were exhausted—spiritually, emotionally, and physically. They were facing exile, their nation was crumbling, and hope seemed as distant as the stars. Sound familiar? Sometimes our own circumstances can feel just as overwhelming. Isaiah's message wasn't "try harder" or "push through it." Instead, he offered something revolutionary: the promise that those who wait upon the Lord will find their strength renewed.

The Hebrew word for "wait" here doesn't mean sitting around doing nothing. It's the same word used for twisting rope—a process that requires patience, intention, and trust in the outcome. When we "wait upon the Lord," we're actively choosing to intertwine our lives with His, trusting that His timing and His ways are better than our frantic attempts to force solutions.

Notice the beautiful progression in this verse: soaring like eagles, running without weariness, and walking without fainting. God meets us in our mountaintop moments, our seasons of active service, and even in our everyday, ordinary steps. His protection isn't just for the dramatic moments—it covers every aspect of our journey.

Living This Out Today

In our achievement-oriented culture, waiting feels counterproductive. We want instant results, quick fixes, and immediate answers to our prayers. But God's protection often comes through teaching us to find strength in stillness. Maybe you're waiting for a job opportunity, a relationship to heal, or a health situation to improve. That waiting isn't wasted time—it's where God does some of His deepest work in our hearts.

This doesn't mean we become passive. Waiting on the Lord means aligning our efforts with His wisdom, seeking His guidance in our decisions, and trusting His protection even when we can't see the full picture. It's choosing to believe that God's shield is stronger than our own attempts at self-protection. Whether you're facing financial stress, relationship conflicts, or health concerns, His promise remains the same: those who wait on Him will find the strength they need for whatever lies ahead.

Your Source of Strength

Friend, if you're feeling worn down today, remember this: your strength doesn't have to come from your own reserves. God isn't asking you to muster up more willpower or work longer hours. He's inviting you to rest in His protection, to trust His timing, and to find your identity not in what you accomplish, but in whose you are. Under His wings, you can find the rest that leads to true renewal—and the strength to soar again.

To reflect on

  1. What area of your life are you trying to control instead of waiting on God's guidance?
  2. How has God shown His protection in your life during previous seasons of waiting?
  3. What does 'mounting up with wings like eagles' look like practically in your current circumstances?
  4. Where do you typically turn for strength when you feel depleted, and how might God want to be your primary source instead?

One step today

Set a 5-minute timer today to sit quietly and surrender one specific worry to God, asking Him to renew your strength in that area.

A prayer

O Lord our God, how excellent is thy name in all the earth! Thou art our refuge and our fortress, our God in whom we trust. We lift up our eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh our help. Our help cometh from thee, O Lord, who made heaven and earth. Blessed be thy holy name forever, for thou art worthy to receive glory and honor and power. He that dwelleth in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. Cover us this day with thy feathers, and under thy wings let us trust. Thy truth shall be our shield and buckler. We shall not be afraid for the terror by night, nor for the arrow that flieth by day. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Create in us clean hearts, O God, and renew right spirits within us. Let thy mercy, O Lord, be upon us, according as we hope in thee. Strengthen us with might by thy Spirit in the inner man, that Christ may dwell in our hearts by faith. Guide our steps according to thy word, and let not any iniquity have dominion over us. Bless our going out and our coming in from this time forth, and even forevermore. We commit our ways unto thee, trusting also in thee, and thou shalt bring it to pass. In thy name we pray, Amen.
