Finding Wisdom for Life's Tough Choices - Proverbs 4:7

“Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.”

Proverbs 4:7 · KJV

Finding Wisdom for Life's Tough Choices

You're staring at your phone at 11 PM, scrolling through job listings for the third time this week. Your current job pays well, but you dread Monday mornings. A friend offered you a position at their startup – less money, more risk, but genuine excitement about the work. Your spouse has concerns, your parents think you're crazy to even consider it, and you're lying awake wondering how to make the right choice. Sound familiar? We all face crossroads where the path forward isn't clear, and we desperately need something more reliable than a pros-and-cons list.

When Solomon wrote "Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding," he was speaking as someone who had everything – wealth, power, success – yet recognized that wisdom was worth more than all of it combined. The Hebrew word for "principal" here means "first in importance" or "the beginning." Solomon is saying that before you pursue anything else in life, pursue wisdom first. It's not just another good thing to have; it's the foundation that makes everything else work.

But notice he doesn't just say "get wisdom" and leave it at that. He adds "and with all thy getting get understanding." Wisdom and understanding work together like a compass and a map. Wisdom gives us the principles to live by, while understanding helps us apply those principles to our specific situations. You might know it's wise to be honest (wisdom), but understanding helps you know how to speak truth with love in a difficult conversation with your teenage daughter.

In our information age, we're drowning in data but starving for wisdom. We can Google any fact in seconds, but we still struggle with knowing what to do when our marriage feels stale, our kids are making poor choices, or our career feels meaningless. The difference is that information tells us what happened, but wisdom tells us what matters. Information is about facts; wisdom is about truth that transforms how we live.

Here's what's beautiful about pursuing wisdom: it's not about having all the answers immediately. It's about developing a relationship with the God who does. When you're facing that job decision, wisdom doesn't necessarily come as a voice from heaven saying "take the startup job." More often, it comes as you pray, seek godly counsel, consider your family's needs, evaluate your motives, and trust God with the outcome. Wisdom teaches us that some decisions are less about finding the one "perfect" choice and more about making a good choice with integrity and faith.

The prayer theme today is protection, and there's a deep connection here. Pursuing wisdom is one of the most protective things you can do for your life. Wisdom protects us from the devastating consequences of foolish choices. It protects our relationships from unnecessary damage, our finances from reckless decisions, and our hearts from being led astray by emotions that change like the weather.

Remember, God wants to give you wisdom even more than you want to receive it. James 1:5 promises that if we lack wisdom and ask God for it, He gives generously without finding fault. You don't have to figure out life on your own. The same God who guides the stars in their courses cares about your daily decisions and wants to guide you through them. Take heart – wisdom is available, understanding is possible, and God's protection surrounds those who seek His guidance.

To reflect on

  1. What decision are you currently facing where you need God's wisdom?
  2. How do you typically make important decisions - do you seek wisdom first or as a last resort?
  3. What's the difference between worldly knowledge and biblical wisdom in your own experience?
  4. Who are the wise counselors in your life that you can turn to for guidance?

One step today

Identify one decision you're currently facing and spend 10 minutes in prayer specifically asking God for wisdom, then reach out to one wise person in your life for their perspective.

A prayer

O Lord our God, thou art worthy to receive glory and honor and power, for thou hast created all things. How excellent is thy name in all the earth! Thou art our rock and our fortress, our deliverer in whom we trust. We lift up our eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh our help - our help cometh from thee, O Lord, who made heaven and earth. Blessed be thy holy name forever and ever. Heavenly Father, we come before thy throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need. He that dwelleth in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. Be thou our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Create in us clean hearts, O God, and renew right spirits within us. Let the words of our mouths and the meditation of our hearts be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, our strength and our redeemer. We thank thee, O God, for thou art good, and thy mercy endureth forever. Thy faithfulness reacheth unto the clouds, and thy righteousness is like the great mountains. Bless the Lord, O our souls, and forget not all his benefits - who forgiveth all our iniquities, who healeth all our diseases, who redeemeth our lives from destruction. Now unto him that is able to keep us from falling and to present us faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy - to the only wise God our Savior, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. Amen.
