Love in Action: Beyond Good Intentions - 1 John 3:18
“My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.”
When Actions Speak Louder
We've all been there—scrolling through social media, seeing a friend's post about a difficult situation, typing "thoughts and prayers" or "let me know if you need anything," and then... moving on. Our hearts are genuinely in the right place, but somehow our good intentions never quite translate into actual help. Maybe it's the coworker struggling with childcare, or the neighbor dealing with illness, or the friend facing financial hardship. We care deeply, but caring and doing often feel like two different things.
The Heart of Authentic Love
John's words cut straight to the heart of what authentic love looks like: "Let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth." This isn't John being harsh—it's John being real. He understood something crucial about human nature: it's incredibly easy to say we love someone, but much harder to show it through our actions.
The Greek word for "deed" here is ergon, which means work or action—the kind that requires effort, planning, and sometimes sacrifice. John isn't dismissing words entirely; encouraging words matter deeply. But he's saying that love without corresponding action is incomplete love. It's like offering someone a recipe when they're hungry instead of actually cooking them a meal.
This connects beautifully to the broader message of 1 John, where the apostle repeatedly emphasizes that our faith must be visible and tangible. Just as Jesus didn't just talk about love but demonstrated it through healing, feeding, and ultimately sacrificing His life, we're called to love with the same hands-on, roll-up-your-sleeves approach.
Making Love Practical
Here's where it gets challenging for most of us: translating love into action requires us to move beyond our comfort zones. It means the single mom in your small group needs actual babysitting, not just prayers about her exhaustion. It means your elderly neighbor needs help with groceries, not just a friendly wave. It means your struggling friend needs financial help or a job referral, not just sympathy.
Sometimes we hesitate because we worry our efforts won't be enough, or we don't know exactly what to do. But here's the beautiful truth: love in action doesn't require perfection, just willingness. Maybe you can't solve someone's financial crisis, but you can bring dinner. Maybe you can't cure someone's loneliness, but you can show up for coffee. Small actions, done with genuine love, often carry the greatest impact.
The Protection of Active Love
When we love through our actions, something powerful happens—we create a protective community around each other. This connects beautifully with our prayer theme of protection today. God's protection often comes through the loving actions of His people. We become His hands and feet, creating safety nets of practical care that shield others from isolation, desperation, and despair.
You Are God's Love in Action
Remember, friend, you don't have to be wealthy, perfectly organized, or incredibly talented to love through action. You just need to be willing to let God use your ordinary resources—your time, skills, presence, or resources—to make an extraordinary difference in someone's life. When you choose action over mere intention, you're reflecting the very heart of God, who didn't just say He loved the world, but showed it through Jesus.
To reflect on
- Think of a time when someone showed love to you through actions rather than just words. How did that impact you?
- Is there someone in your life right now who needs practical help rather than just encouragement?
- What holds you back from moving from loving words to loving actions?
- How might God be calling you to be His hands and feet in someone's life this week?

A prayer
O Lord our God, Thou art our refuge and our fortress, our God in whom we trust. We come before Thy throne of grace with thanksgiving and praise, for Thou art good and Thy mercy endureth forever. Blessed be Thy holy name, for Thou hast been our dwelling place in all generations. We lift up our eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh our help - our help cometh from Thee, O Lord, who made heaven and earth. Father, we cry unto Thee from the depths of our hearts: be Thou our shield and our exceeding great reward this day. Cover us with Thy feathers, and under Thy wings let us trust. Let not our hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid, for Thou art with us always. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Guide us in Thy truth and teach us, for Thou art the God of our salvation. Make Thy face to shine upon us and be gracious unto us. We confess our sins before Thee, O merciful Father, and ask that Thou wouldest create in us clean hearts and renew right spirits within us. Cast us not away from Thy presence, and take not Thy Holy Spirit from us. Restore unto us the joy of Thy salvation, and uphold us with Thy free spirit. We pray for all those whom Thou hast placed in our hearts - bless them and keep them, make Thy face shine upon them and give them peace. Now unto Him who is able to keep us from falling and to present us faultless before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy - to the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. Into Thy hands we commit our spirits, for Thou hast redeemed us, O Lord God of truth. Let us lie down in peace and sleep, for Thou, Lord, only makest us dwell in safety. Amen.
