“My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.”

Beyond Words: True Love in Action

We've all been there – scrolling through social media, seeing another tragedy or someone's struggle, and typing "thoughts and prayers" before moving on to the next post. Or maybe we've told a friend going through a tough time, "Let me know if you need anything!" while secretly hoping they won't actually ask. It's not that our hearts are wrong; we genuinely care. But somehow, our love often gets stuck in the realm of good intentions and kind words.

When Love Gets Real

John, the beloved disciple who knew Jesus intimately, cuts straight to the heart of authentic love in today's verse. He's not dismissing the importance of words – after all, he wrote them down for us to read! But John understood something profound: love that stays in our hearts and minds, never making it to our hands and feet, isn't really love at all. It's sentiment.

The Greek word John uses for "deed" here is ergon, which means work or action that requires effort and intention. This isn't accidental kindness or random acts that make us feel good. This is love that rolls up its sleeves, looks around to see what needs doing, and then does it – even when it's inconvenient, costly, or uncomfortable.

John had watched Jesus live this way. He saw Him wash dirty feet, touch lepers, feed thousands, and ultimately lay down His life. Jesus didn't just preach about love; He embodied it in ways that were messy, sacrificial, and undeniably real.

Love in the Everyday

So what does this look like in our Monday-through-Friday lives? It's easy to think we need to make grand gestures or solve major problems, but active love often shows up in surprisingly ordinary ways. It's choosing to listen – really listen – when your teenager wants to talk, even though you're exhausted from work. It's bringing groceries to the elderly neighbor instead of just thinking you should. It's showing up to help a friend move, watching someone's kids during a crisis, or simply being present when someone is grieving.

But here's where it gets challenging: this kind of love requires us to move beyond our comfort zones and busy schedules. It asks us to pay attention to the needs around us and respond, even when it's inconvenient. Sometimes we'll feel inadequate or worry we don't have enough to offer. That's okay – God doesn't call us to be perfect, just faithful. Even small actions, done with genuine love, can have profound impact.

The Beautiful Truth

Here's the encouraging reality: when we love in deed and truth, we're not just helping others – we're becoming more like Jesus. Every time we choose action over apathy, presence over platitudes, we're allowing God's love to flow through us in tangible ways. And in a world that's often cynical about faith, our actions become a powerful testimony to the reality of God's love.

Remember, you don't have to change the world today. You just need to love one person in one real way. God will take it from there.

To reflect on

  1. When have you received love through someone's actions rather than just their words? How did it impact you?
  2. What keeps you from moving beyond good intentions to actual loving actions in your daily life?
  3. Think of someone in your life right now who needs practical love. What specific action could you take this week?
  4. How might your relationships change if you focused more on showing love through deeds rather than just expressing it through words?

One step today

Identify one person in your life who is struggling and take one specific, practical action to help them this week – whether it's bringing a meal, offering childcare, running an errand, or simply spending focused time with them.

A prayer

O Lord our God, Thou art our refuge and our fortress, our God in whom we trust. We come before Thy throne of grace with thanksgiving and praise, for Thou art good and Thy mercy endureth forever. Blessed be Thy holy name, for Thou hast been our dwelling place in all generations. We lift up our eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh our help - our help cometh from Thee, O Lord, who made heaven and earth. Father, we cry unto Thee from the depths of our hearts: be Thou our shield and our exceeding great reward this day. Cover us with Thy feathers, and under Thy wings let us trust. Let not our hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid, for Thou art with us always. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Guide us in Thy truth and teach us, for Thou art the God of our salvation. Make Thy face to shine upon us and be gracious unto us. We confess our sins before Thee, O merciful Father, and ask that Thou wouldest create in us clean hearts and renew right spirits within us. Cast us not away from Thy presence, and take not Thy Holy Spirit from us. Restore unto us the joy of Thy salvation, and uphold us with Thy free spirit. We pray for all those whom Thou hast placed in our hearts - bless them and keep them, make Thy face shine upon them and give them peace. Now unto Him who is able to keep us from falling and to present us faultless before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy - to the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. Into Thy hands we commit our spirits, for Thou hast redeemed us, O Lord God of truth. Let us lie down in peace and sleep, for Thou, Lord, only makest us dwell in safety. Amen.
